I like that. Did you pull those from junk silver rolls or bags?

All but eight of them came from LCS junk silver trays. The 32d and 32s came from an LCS. I traded him some unwanted 90% and Morgans for them. My last few LCS trips were fruitless, so I gave in and bought the last six online.

Good evidence that you can enjoy the hobby without spending a fortune, but the big $ coins still have that something that draws us in. Just can't get too carried away. Something for everyone if they just give it a chance and stop thinking we are nerds.

I’m working on a Flyers to Lincolns penny folders set. All low grade but a lot of fun without breaking my bank. Congrats on finishing!

Way to go! I've been trying to get more customers to do these kinds of fun sets.

    Congrats!!!

Except for the folders (mine are blue Whitman tri-fold) and lacking just the 32 D & S, my collection looks very similar. Mine are somewhat better-looking towards the 50's & 60's, but most were collected as a youth more than 45 years ago from circulation, parents/grandparents' stashes, newspaper delivery collecting, and trips with my grandparents to search thru "melt" candidates at local Philly smelting companies in the 70's. Later, from change or cashiers' tills while working retail management, and maybe 1 or 2 from trades in the Internet age. Working on 2 sets that will go to my kids......

Similar sets of everything from IHC's/Lincolns, Buffs/Jeffs, Mercs/Roosies, Walkers/Franklins/JFK's, & Morgan/Peace - - all collected since childhood & supplemented in the Internet Age, and mostly completed, with the exception of keys & semi-keys. Don't think I'll ever complete those.......

I avoided the nicer looking later dates intentionally. I thought it gave the set a nice consistency.

Wow! Congratulations on completing so many sets! I would love to say that I have done the same someday.

Now, that brings back memories of my collection in the 60's and 70's. Thanks for sharing and congratulations on your effort. Nice reward.

I think I'd really be happy putting a set like this together. I know if it kept me busy and a way from other coins the wife would be happy too.

Great set and thank you for sharing.

Thx! Just to clarify, with the exception of the Jeff's, Roosies, Franklins, JFK's, Sac's/NA's/Prez $1's, all those other sets are still missing keys & semi-keys for completion............. :/

Congrats and I'm so glad you showed this.
I love seeing this type of collecting.

I like the look, nice job how long did it take to complete?

It took almost two years. I have three LCS that I frequent. I would try to go to at least one a week. I wanted to get them all from 90% bins. I also passed over some later dates that were too clean to match. Of course, finding the two key dates wasn't happening so when one of the LCS owners told me he had them I decided to do a trade with him. The last two months I needed just six more but I kept on striking out so I decided to order them online.

The six I could not find in junk bins (excluding the 32D and 32S) were the 32P, 36S, 38S, 39S, 40D, and 49S.

Congrats on the completion of the silver Washington quarters. It looks awesome. My brother in law is doing the same thing with the Lincoln cent and he is trying to maintain an old look consistency and purposely staying away from anything that looks too new.

Cool set! I have wanted to do a similar set in a dansco book.
The thought of doing most of it from junk rolls is fun.
The nostalgic feeling of filling an album/ book with circulated found Coins is the gateway for the hobby.

I started a dansco circulation set for mercury dimes, Barber dimes, copper rounds, and of course several Jefferson sets. I just have to find a used Washington quarter dansco now...

Nice wholesome set being pulled from the 90% bin for the most part.

Good on you- it's a lot of fun picking through bins, and it can yield surprises from time to time. Your set reminds me of Dad's that he took out of circulation during the B.C. era- "before clad." He also saved many circulated Walkers too. These bins are probably as close to that experience that we can connect to, experience, and touch- neat!

Back in the early 1960's I put together a set ,except for the 1932-D and S, from circulation.

  • BJandTundraBJandTundra Posts: 388 ✭✭✭✭

Did same thing in the 50's and 60"s. Like about everyone else had to bu the 32s/d, but it was the thrill of the chase at the time which made it fun. Knowing it could be done if you stuck with it. Same for the other series at that time.

That is much of how I am looking at my return to collecting. I'm not building an investment for my heirs to sell, rather circulation sets by me and a few by my dad that will be passed on (hopefully) as a family heirloom.

My strategy is about collecting what I intend to keep, not investing in what I plan to sell.

Sweet collection....I'm still trying to put together a little set of my own. Walkers

EXACTLY how I have approached coin collecting in my grown-up years! As a youth, I collected from change, etc for the fun of it, and as a group activity to share with my grandparents. Once I became a Dad (and realized I'd never acquire the "keys" & "semi-keys"), my goal became to accumulate a "piece of me" and a link to my grandparents that I could hand down to my kids (and someday theirs) to look at & enjoy (and maybe keep current), as well as something out of history that they could learn about & enjoy - - things they just don't make anymore......... I've never looked at it as an investment of anything like that........ :)

I originally posted this a few months ago. @Aspie_Rocco brought it back and I am thankful that he did because my intention was to share my set with fellow members here.

I appreciate all of the positive feedback.
    Thanks for looking!
