I actually found this in circulation

Don't get too excited, but I received a 1943 S War Nickel in change today. That was really a first for me. The coin would maybe grade a "Fine" or VG at worst.

When I search a box of nickels (2000 coins) I might find between one and three on average. Many of them are not nice looking.

If you got a decent one in change that is indeed a rarity.

    Nice score!

I got a buffalo in change at a Eugene Oregon Starbucks last year.

I actually found 13 of the little darlings in a box once about three years ago. More recently like about a month ago I found six of them. They are out there and not all coin counters(especially banks) reject them.

Have found three this summer, including the S. Most folks don't realize they exist much less they are still circulating.

At the height of the silver jump in 81, I owned a mom & pops store and a traveling man from Canada stopped in to buy gas and when he paid he had rolls of dimes. I opened one and it was typical clad roosies. I took the other 4 and put in the register. later I went through them to see if any silver and two complete rolls of Canadian dimes, which were all silver. I was dumbstruck knowing how much this family could have sold these for and if they had more, they might have been able to have turned around and went home. Lucky day for me, not for them.

When I was 15, I went to the bank and bought a bag of nickels. I sorted through them all and found 3 war nickels!!! I didn't know what they were, but knew they were old and different with those giant mintmark on the back. Years later I realized they were actually war nickels. Now they don't even sell bags of nickels at the bank anymore, just rolls...and chances of finding a war nickel or a buffalo are slim to none. So for all of you finding them, wonderful luck to you- keep your eyes peeled!!!!!!!!!

It is interesting to find one of these old nickels in change or a roll...I did find one in recent memory... not sure when, but still have it. I think I should come out of retirement and get a job as a store clerk, that way I could search change every day.... :D Be first in line for what comes in... ;) Nah.... having too much fun with my other hobbies to give up the time. Cheers, RickO
