Engraved 1799 Draped Bust Dollar

I like to collect some exonumia and figured I'd share this interesting engraved 1799 draped bust dollar. I'm not sure if it is a love token for a birthday, or possibly civil war related, but it probably isn't referencing The Emancipation Proclamation issued on this date.

    Wouldn't you like to know the story behind the engraving? Too bad the reason has probably been long forgotten by the family involved.

    Very cool! Already an old coin when it was engraved.

    I still regret NOT buying a cool and ELABORATELY engraved Seated Dollar off eBay about 15 years ago.
    It was even researched.

    Could be a birth coin as dollars were sometimes used as teething rings.

    Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?



    A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.



    A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

    What was the engraving and year of the dollar?

    Can't recall. It was Civil War related and a known officer.

    Jan 1 1863 was the date the Emancipation Proclamation took effect.
