A new Buff for my collection....PL...Shout out to, Andy, at Angel Dee's
I recently purchased this beautiful 15-D from my very good friend, Andy, from "Angel Dee's." I've owned a few 15-D Buffs in my life but this one here is a standout for many reasons. First off I see it as very proof like but for some reason buffalo nickels fall short of receiving that designation.
A while back I have posted a 16-d I purchased and it graded 66 along with the coveted CAC approval. I ended up selling that buff to my friend, Andy. I told him I've always seen that Buff as a 66+ to a 67. He agreed and paid me my asking price. Long story short, Andy, with his great knowledge and wisdom of grading sent that same 16-d in 4 times. On the forth submission it graded 66+ . Now worth 29K. Andy didn't have to even tell me it made the cut, but he did. He also told me to pick out a coin from his inventory up to a certain amount and call it mine. Now this is a VERY good man. I'm so happy for him too as he is without question the man when it comes to grading these Buffs. Much better than I will ever hope to be. With all that said I want to tell everyone here on this forum what a very good man, Andy is.
Thank you my friend. You are a very honorable man whom I respect 100%
So, here's that buff. Thank you to all for looking and of course any comments are welcome.
Happy hunting, Joe

Great new coin, and Andy is the man for Lincolns. He helped me to locate three tough mid 20's S mint coins to complete my Lincoln set last year, a standout dealer.

It is an amazing coin and absolutely beautiful; however, it is not even close to proof like. "Proof like" refers to the depth of reflectivity of the mirrored fields. This coin does not have reflective fields. Since there are actually coins with a PL designation and the requisite field conditions, using the terminology here only creates confusion.
P.S. Only NGC will bestow all regular issue U.S. coins with a PL designation when warranted. PCGS only does Morgans and select moderns for U.S. issues. NGC has graded three PL buffalo nickels: (1) 1936 MS63 PL, (1) 1937-D MS63 PL, and (1) 1937-D AU58 PL.
Something even rarer than a good and honest man is someone that shouts their praises. Well done gentlemen!
It’s has a “matte” proof like appearance. Especially the obverse. Even the rims are sharp. I guess it’s just an opinion thing.
Thank you
Andy and his wife Alynne are great people and dealers, love talking to them at shows plus getting the occasional coin or two from them. Their inventory is always great to browse, whether you buy or not.

I must agree 100%.
I have been a close friend and customer of Andy and Alynne's for more than 10 years. I can't begin to express how happy I have been with their help in my quest to build quality, early Lincoln and Indian Head cents sets.
Andy's eye is second to none. I trust his opinion over anyone's. PCGS graders...John Albanese...no one's is finer. Better still, Andy is the kind of guy who will guide you to right decisions even if they don't benefit him. How many dealers can you say that about?
Recently, after two decades of assembling small cents sets in gem+ grades, I decided to sell my early Lincolns. I'm approaching 70 years and it's the right thing for my family. Andy Skrabalak is the man I turned to. He'll get my IHC's next.
Apologies for gushing like this. But when you find a wonderful resource like Angel Dee's you want to tell the world. My good friend @crazyhounddog knows this well. What a great '15-D Buffalo! Joe knows his nickels.
Lance.
Beautiful Buff Joe and you are 1000% correct about Andy! There is nobody more upfront and honest in the coin business. I have dealt with Andy many times and he is the greatest!! I was at his table a couple of years ago at a FUN show and he was dealing with one of his customers who deals in the very upper tier of Buff's. The guy had a very tuff date (not sure which one) but it was one where the price could jump 10-15K between half grades that he wanted to sell or trade up. He shot Andy a price. Andy thought it was under graded. So he said he would take it at an already high price and that he said he would send it in for regrade. Bottom line is that he sent it in 4 times and each time it upgraded half a point. And each time he cut a check to this guy for half of the difference in price. He wouldn't have had to do that, but he made that buy with these upgrade splitting as part of the deal. And this was already a PCGS coin, so Andy knowing Buff's as he does made this arrangement and wanted to be fair. A lot of dealers would have low balled the guy and never let him know about the upgrades. Sorry about the long winded reply, But thought Andy deserved the praise. I forget the grades and exact amounts, but the guy made a bundle more that his asking price.
He is a great guy, Jon. One of the best around.
One of the many values of this forum is the visibility that great dealers receive. Praise for this dealer - and others - helps to steer collectors in the right direction for quality coins at fair prices. That is a superbly struck 1915D....and a fantastic addition to your incredible collection. Cheers, RickO
Looking at this 15-D again I don't think I have ever seen a Buff so well struck....especially for a 15-D. The braid on the obverse and the hair on the Buffalo above the horn are so well struck. The color to boot! I love the blueberry toning on both sides plus the sunset orange on the reverse. Just a most beautiful Buffalo in all aspects. Great addition to your herd Joe! You are the Buffalo man!!
Andy and Alynne are mainstays in the hobby. Thoroughly good people, who have great inventory.
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
Pens how you look at it.
Pete
It looks like the sun is setting on Black Diamond. That is a problem free coin with clean fields and fully struck devices. 15-D was produced with a lot more care for some reason, and even high grade specimens show excellent high point detail.
I prefer it over 16-D.
Pete
I always browse his inventory of late but am puzzled as to why there are no NGC coins. There are many NGC Lincolns and Buffalos even with CAC beans that can be had at lower prices which may even mean more margin on the sale.
Nice buffalo. Haven't heard anything except good things about Angel Dees.
PS I noticed Lance's set missing from the registry. Was sad to see that.

I think we all have our preferences and Andy is no different.
I can not speak for, Andy. For me, personally, I find most good folks prefer pcgs. I do believe they are more respected than any other grading company. I’m sure not bashing NGC or any other company.
Thanks again
-This comment takes the cake. You leave 20 Grand on the table and are so happy about it and the dealer, who is that much richer? This is crazy talk and no one would/should be happy about that.
Thanks for sharing a very nice story about a well-respected and reputable dealer. I like him. He has a remarkable eye for coins in his specialty.
Tom
Nice cheap shot.
ive heard all sorts of good things about angel dee's. thats a real nice coin as well
Do you have anything else to add?
Great story and stunning 1915-D. If I hadn't seen the D mint mark I would swear this is a proof.

You can't really be happy about leaving the 20K on the table. This whole post is bizarre, and I have no doubt the dealer is a nice guy. You make it sound like you are thrilled that someone else got the real money on a coin you owned, when you could have also just submitted it a few more times yourself. You even stated you felt it was 66+ or 67. (Which makes this even more bizarre by the way) I am sure I am not alone in thinking that is strange, but no one else speaks up once the herd mentality takes over in a thread.
Finally, isn't this dealer also adding to the perceived Grade-Flation by submitting over and over again?
Congratulations on the 15-D. That's gorgeous!
Maybe there are folks that feel the same way you do. But you’re so damn good at twisting the knife, they don’t need to speak up. You’re on a roll.
Great story, Joe, thanks for sharing it with the forum.
The difference is knowing when to submit over and over.
My guess is that after two or three tries most collectors would give up. When Andy feels strongly about a coin's upgrade potential (or, said another way, that a coin that was undergraded to begin with) he is determined.
I bought a '23-S Lincoln in a 64RB holder. Very tough coin. Andy felt it was full red. Branch Mint 1920's Lincolns are set apart from the rest of the series in many ways...often because of miserable, overused dies...but also because of poor copper quality resulting in varying color.
So I resubmitted it. No change. Andy had me bring it to a show and leave it in his hands. I picked it up at the next show, now graded 64RD. No charge beyond his discounted grading fee.
Lance.
I am proud to say Andy is my friend. I’m not the guy that will send and resend coins in for grading. Like you said Lance he is stubborn in that regard. He can split hairs to where I can not. I can hold my own with buffalo nickels. I know the series but Andy is the master. I’m proud to say this good man has mentored me on the series. Not like I was his protégé but when he talks Buffs I listen up real good. Sure I could have submitted over and over again but I was not as sure as he was. Like I said he is the master, and I totally mean that. Most always when I sell a coin I don’t look back. But when this coin did finally make the cut to a 66+ he let me know right away and kicked me down a chunk. That’s a good, honorable man. How many sellers can you rattle off that will treat you that good? Furthermore, I had that same coin listed on eBay for months. Guess how many offers I got? Zero that’s how many. I was just asking book value too. So, anyone could have purchased it and made that money. Like I said Andy paid me my asking price. I bought that Buff for less than 200 bucks, shipped. You bet I made some money but I have enough money ! I’m comfortably retired.
From where I come from a deal is a deal. I expected nothing else and yes ya damn right I’m happy for him. I made my money, he’s making his and that my friends is what makes the world go around.
This is my HOBBY I do not do this for a living, Andy does.
I’m so impressed with my man Andy and this transaction so I’m giving him a shout out. Some folks think maybe I should be ashamed? Well then, chain me to the wall
Joe sold the 1916-D to Andy as a 66, not a 66+ or 67. They both agreed on a price. What Andy does with the coin after the sale is no one's business. If Andy sends it in for a regrade and it goes down Joe owes Andy no money. If the grade goes up Andy isn't obligated to give Joe anything. I Imagine most dealers wouldn't. But Andy did............. when he didn't have to.

Lance, give him your AU-58 half that came back XF cleaned and see what he can do!
Folks don't pay any attention to oil-of-olay........he is a TOTAL TOOL!!!
I don't have a dog in the fight but if I believed a coin was 66+ or 67, I would have, and always do, resubmit it a few times. As I read this, it seems the hidden message is that dealers at shows get better grades than everyone else.
I personally think it is just grading cycles and it seems others are getting better grades. (Or worse, as is the case recently)
Andy words cannot describe the feelings I have for you as a coin dealer and a friend you are truly one of the rarest in our business love dinner
I've never dealt with Andy but he sounds like someone I'd like to deal with.
Trust me, Ron. He is the very best this hobby has to offer. His inventory is next to none.
Thank you, Ron
Angel Dee's is the ONLY dealer that has a large high quality inventory of two cent pieces... Andy is one of my first stops when I attend the CSNS.
I 100% agree with ya, Ray. He is such a good man.
I forgot to mention Joe, and I'm so tired of telling you........you obtained another fine member for your herd.
I like that! (... and Andy).

It is not just blindly resubmitting coins that will get you upgrades consistently. There are various strategies that the best submitters have learned to ensure the best chances for upgrades. I have learned some of these strategies from some of the best in the business. Andy is one of these submitters. If you ever get to deal with him, you will quickly learn that Andy is the Best of the Best. There is no more honest dealer within the entire numismatic community.
