Thanks, guys. I've gotten flak from some who see it as merely bullion and incredibly overpriced bullion at that. I think it's a beautiful piece that is iconic and, with a mintage of just 998 pieces, quite rare. A $1k coin when it can be found.

By comparison, the 1995-W proof silver eagle arrived more than a decade later, and was arguably a manufactured rarity. It had a mintage of over 30,000. A thumbnail count shows about 8,000 69 and 70s between both TPGs.
    And it runs $3,000.

We are like children who look at print and see a serpent in the last letter but one, and a sword in the last.

A couple Second Republic circulated coins which just happen to be top pops. The 25c is XF40 and the 50c is VF35.

@bidask How come there are so few of the second republic coinage around?

I don't have an answer, but on the two coins I posted, mintage was tiny. The 1871-Go S 25c had a mintage of 172,000 while the 1871-Mo M 50c mintage was just 14,000. That probably plays into your question. Of course the Second Republic coinage must have seen heavy usage with low survival rates as well. The biggest factor might be that they are just not as popular amongst the collector base as compared to the First Republic real (1/2 thru 8) coinage. If that is the case, there is probably a lot of circulated pieces out there that just haven't made it in for grading. Anyone else have any ideas?

For sure coins from the Second Republic are not as popular. As such, the incentive to grade is less (from dealers). I for once like them, but it is very hard to find them in high grade, or to even find them at all.

Abuelo, I guess we have the same thoughts on the popularity of these with collectors, especially when compared to the First Republic real coinage. One other thought I had, perhaps valid, perhaps not is that those 1869-1873 Peso coins didn't go over well in Mexico and they went back to the 8 reales. Maybe this impacted the saving/survival rate of the same design 25c and 50c coins...just a thought.

A large group of these 25 centavo and 50 centavo coins have been auctioned on Great Collections the last month or so. All circs from what I recall, VF20 - AU5X coins. They all had similar PCGS cert numbers so I think a couple of large groups got graded all at once. I didn't follow them closely, but no doubt a bunch of top pops were auctioned, mostly due to the low pops in general for these pieces. 1871 is just a special date for me (silly, but 100 year birth coins for me) so I picked those up to pair with several other 1871's I had (two 8R's - PC64s of Ca & Ho and an NGC 63 Mo Peso).

I like them too, quite the cool obverse design which as you know was used either exactly or something very close to it with the early 1950's 25 centavos and the earliest Onza coins.

    Take care/Jeff

@cecropiamoth you are right. These decimal coinage was very unpopular in Mexico. The low denominations caused a popular rebellion against President González as the coins were cuper nickel instead of silver. Pesos (Not successful taking the place of 8R) were discontinued in favour of the old 8R as the new design was not accepted... in China! And as many Mexican series, are impossible to complete as almost reach mint produced every denomination. Some can be found in low grade, but not all, and in high grade many are impossible.

But why are they hard to find at all, especially the pesos ......were many or most melted?

Just had these graded. Not sure about top pops at NGC

    1854 Austria Marriage Gulden
    PCGS 65

    1868 Austria Shooting Thaler
    PCGS 65
It's not designated on the holder (for whatever reason) but this coin is easily PL and pushing DMPL
One of the most beautiful coins I've ever had the pleasure to have

Some NGC cap & rays 8R that would be top pop at PCGS. The Culiacan & Oaxaca mint coins could both go down one grade and still be top pops...but I would really like these to cross at grade. In hand I have high confidence on the Cn coin, not as sure on the Oa, but the strike is amazing and fields nearly perfect.

PCGS seems to have recently started designating cap & rays 8R proof-like (PL). There are two currently in the pop report. I own one NGC designated PL, an 1881-Mo MH in 64PL, a date that PCGS doesn't have a PL coin in their census. An amazing piece in hand, incredible mirrors, but really strange with all those die cracks. I'm going to eventually see if this passes muster at PCGS as a PL.
