Note to PCGS: There is a software bug in the pcgs registry

I thought I would post this here in the forum. I was hoping maybe someone would see this who has the authority to fix.

For the past week or so, I've been seeing random pcgs registry thumbnail images (generated from standard PCGS TrueView photos) that are larger than the rest.

For example in this registry set:
https://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/publishedset/155927

The Trueview image thumbnail for the 1909 is quite a bit larger than the other thumbnails. (see screen-capture at bottom). This seems to happen once every 50 coins or so (very occasional and very random). And started about 1 to 2 weeks ago.

I have traced it down to this. For the images that display larger thumbnails, it links to a TrueView image that is bigger than the standard 1100 x 555

For example for the bigger 1909 Lincoln in the above registry set, the TrueView image it's linking to is larger (1140x575) than the standard large TV (1100x555).

Personally, I like the larger thumbnails, and i wish all the thumbnail images in the pcgs registry were larger like that! However clearly it's the larger thumbnails that are the outliers.

If there was a way pcgs could make these larger thumbnails standard, that would be great, as I always felt the old standard (tiny) thumbnails were too small. However i'm sure that's asking too much.

In any case, however pcgs wants to do this, it should be made consistent.

@PCGSDev Might be interested in hearing about this.

I don't think it is a bug at all. It all depends on the size of the image that you upload to your set.

    Hi,

Thanks for alerting us to this. We are aware of the issue and are working to get this resolved likely sometime next week.

Looks like the larger thumbnail fits just fine in the table. Maybe this bug should become a feature.

It has nothing to do with the size of the full-sized image.

The size of the offending thumbnail is 95x48 whereas the smaller ones are 64x32.

Even the filename of both the old and new thumbnails denotes a size of 64px.

I suspect the routine to create thumbnails was changed to the bigger size, inadvertently.

Thanks for attempting to fix this Josh. I appreciate it. I agree that I actually LIKE the bigger thumbnail images. (Similar to what ChrisH821 posted above). I wouldn't mind the resolution being all the thumbnails are made this new bigger size. They are much easier to see that way.

The size of the full-sized image does make a difference. I know because I upload different pics and get different size thumbnails on my sets.

I have several sets with the same problem. I have My Inventory to automatically download TrueViews, which is what is used in the sets (both thumbnail and regular full size). So in this case the size of full-sized images is the same size as all the other images in the set, yet the thumbnail images aren't.

Just an FYI ... the problem I am noting above is not from user uploaded photos. The problem noted is from the automatic (automated) trueview photos that pop up by default.

OK....did not know that. I upload my own. Some are TV's and some are pics I make myself...hence the difference in size.

no problem, it's confusing. I personally like the larger thumbs. Trouble is when I already have a TrueView photo on file and then try to upload another photo (a 2nd photo) there is no way to delete the standard automated TrueView. So i end up with 2 images for that coin. It would be nice if PCGS had an option in the Registry to allow users to specify larger standard TrueView thumbnails to display -- as the current teeny tiny thumbs are really hard to see.

Maybe PCGS just likes that particular coin a whole lot! :)

As learned long ago, the best way to catch a software bug is to set a baited software trap....just like we do for ants and roaches.
