Part I of my research summary article on struck counterfeit 1803 half cents.

The researched "variety" is complicated by the discovery of TWO versions, one I call the "originals" that more closely match the host genuine coin and the second that was retooled into a second I have named "restrikes" to differentiate.

Thx for sharing
Jack,
You and your group of copper specialists are making an invaluable contribution to numismatics! IMHO, without the research you've been doing, many of these counterfeits may have still gone undetected. Just the fact that a "restrike" copy exists with modified characteristics proves that the best counterfeiters are more aware of what goes on in the numismatic press (in this case your research) than most collectors/dealers.
THANKS!
Thanks Insider; the counterfeiters make novice numismatic mistakes, but they were apparently aware of changing the "markers" well before any of this research or articles.
Very interesting. Will this be a series of articles or eventually a book? Cheers, RickO
Series on Coin Week ricko.
I think counterfeit detection and diagnostic examples of any series being published is a fantastic community service!
Kudos to you for putting in the research and sharing it with collectors to help protect the hobby.
Sincere gratitude and thanks,
Best wishes,

Thanks; not as popular or flashy as most of the posts in this forum though...
