"I decided to do some consulting."

Seriously, the formal word for Fired is simply "Discharged"

Most of us have been there at one time or another, in my case refusing to either kiss asses or stab backs. The ones who did best at that miserable place were adept at both.

there are 6 million unfilled jobs in the usa now. a lot of people are quitting just to get a better, more high paying job

What is the actual reason? I find it hard to believe they wouldn't do some follow up searching if you have been unemployed an extended period of time.

  • david3142david3142 Posts: 3,613 ✭✭✭✭✭

You should always answer truthfully but at least in NY, employers are not allowed to ask.

  • logger7logger7 Posts: 9,101 ✭✭✭✭✭

There are plenty of characterless excuses; blame it on someone or something beyond your control. Most employers expect a typical reason, so you can frankly say so without barring a future job.

**Be honest, or you might get sacked quickly.
    **
This is an instant law suit gotcha type stuff, that I had to train new hires of mine when they got ready to conduct interviews.

While outside the purview of interview questions, there is this that will haunt you quickly:

Prospective company contacts previous company and asks these questions, all perfectly legal:

Start and end date of employment.
Is this person eligible for rehire.

If the answer to 2 is no, then many companies stop having any interest at all.

Best interview I had with a person who had been fired. I worked for a large company, excess of 50K people, as a manager, and this person had been fired from our own company years earlier. Yet, he was cleared by HR to interview.

Question? Why were you terminated? I punched out a guy in the cafeteria, but he had pissed me off. I got fired, but he did not.

Question? On your resume, you list a felony conviction that is still active. What happened? I shot a guy 3 times, because he pissed me off, but he lived. 10 year probated, Attempted Murder.

Well, at least he was honest, and actually interviewed well. I decided to pass on him, citing teaming /working with others issues.

The cover for what to do if you do not like how you lost your previous job.

Get a friend to create a sales tax entity, in Texas, or already has one, it is free.

Put your starting date equal to your old release date on LinkedIn.

Have him "hire you" and give you some job description.

When you interview, still be working for the "company" but since the economy is booming, you are looking around,

Your friend can give a excellent reference.

Truth is the best policy. What job field do you work in? Is it possible (if you don't get the job) to do some freelance work for a while and call yourself self employed?

You should never be unemployed if looking. Grab any part time job you can to show drive and responsibility while on the hunt.

I was with the company way too long.....made too much. Replaced by an recent college grad that would work for 1/4 of my salary. Company let every man above age 50 go for a new young female....
That would have been my answer.

Instead I just retired and called it a game.

"They filled my job without my knowledge while I was in prison."

But the real answer: The Truth. Once you have figured out "The Truth", you can sugar coat it to make it sound better, if required. Nobody will blame you for putting the best light on it....but you face a world of hurt if you flat out LIE.

My Division doubled their revenue and tripled profit each year, but the company did not provide commensurate salary and benefits. Now, I'm looking for another company for which the same can be accomplished. :)

I made the insinuation that the head of HR/corporate attorney (how's that for stacking the deck against the employees?) didn't understand the difference between a Right and a Privilege. Voting was one, a Driver's License the other. He didn't appreciate it when I told him to read up on the Constitution.

Not a multiple choice question. Now a days employers try to verify everything you say through social media so it's possible they know the facts before they ask the question. The truth is easiest to remember and employers are getting desperate anyway so if you're qualified, they need you.

If you do what you always did, you get what you always got.

I hired myself. I could never afford to fire me.

  • ZsmartieZsmartie Posts: 135 ✭✭✭

I was terminated so many years ago that most members were not even born yet. In 1973 I was doing research on snow augmentation on the Bridger Mtns of Montana. "Supposedly" I was let go as Nixon cut back in the research funds. I now realize that was bs and they felt I was not supporting my position. Fortunately or unfortunately I ended up at the State of Montana Air Quality Bureau doing their computer work and writing reports on air quality status. I worked there some six years and then went into consulting and eventually started my own air quality/meteorology consulting service of which I ran for some 30 years and retired from. It was a very enjoyable profession. I now am unemployed hauling hay and horse manure for my wife and niece in their horse training business. It does not pay well but can have all the lawn fertilizer I could ever want.

Wow! I do not know what to say regarding that photo. I live a very, very long way from there. And right now anyone dressed (or undressed) like that would freeze to death. That is assuming I did not come to their rescue. I have never been to Hawaii and probably never will, however, I am not sure my old heart would survive. Still absolutely nice to view and dream.

That’s why I despise management people. I don’t even associate with family that is management. I’m a hard core union member. They always get theirs in the end though.

The coal mine closed, then the manufacturing plant closed and shipped all the equipment to China, then the movie production company shipped all the work to Canada, then the school district hired an outside contractor to drive the school buses, then the political survey company found that no one would answer their questions anymore, then ...
