What have YOU taught your KIDS about coin collecting?

topstuftopstuf Posts: 14,803 ✭✭✭✭✭

Counterpoint to the thread of what your parents taught YOU.

I'm curious if anyone here is actually teaching coins to their kids.

And spare the "My kid enjoys looking at my coins" replies.

Yeah, that's a good ..start.. but (at least in my case) even regular "share the wealth" days didn't impress my kids and they were pretty immersed in my collecting/dealing/pawning. My son still ...has... the type set "we" put together, but he doesn't even look at the coins. :'(

Have any of your kids (age unimportant) developed an actual KNOWLEDGE of anything numismatic from what you've ..taught/explained/discussed.. with them?

:)

Just this....Don't embarrass me by asking how much I paid. I already feel bad enough as it is.

My daughter collects shoes, pocketbooks and nice clothes, but not coins. So I don't think I taught her anything about collecting coins.

I don't have one yet but I will tell my kid/s not to listen to me ;) and that KID would be the happiest in the world <3

I tell them to sell my coins one at a time with great photos and they will do very well.

I have taught my daughters nothing about coins....they are not interested. So I just continue to collect, read and look at various coins...keeps me out of trouble - well, not always ;) Cheers, RickO

I've tried to interest my daughters, but they are only interested in spending them. :/

When one of my kids was around 10 years old I tried explaining the70 point grading scale. He picked a random raw coin out of my collection and asked what grade it was. I told him it was a VG 8. He laughed and said "out of 70"? He proceeded to tell me how ugly it was and has not cared about numismatics since! He turns 25 next week! Lol.

It would be easier to get my kids to take accordion lessons than to garner any interest in coins.

Taught them that they can forget about tuition to an ivy League school, but they each get the condition rarity Washington quarter of their choice. :#

My daughter knows a little about coins but is not into them.

She does play the ukulele so she would probably choose the accordion.

I tried to show my 13 year old son the difference between a type one SLQ and a type II SLQ and he ran outta the Den.

Nothing, except to understand the value of my collection and "how to sell it" since she'll probably be the one that ends up selling it after I'm gone.

    Lemme condense all this.

HEY KIDS! THESE THINGS ARE TO SELL!! WATCH OUT THOUGH !!

No kids, but if I had any, my advise to them regarding coins would be "buy low and sell high" !!! ;)

My 7 year old has some interest. He enjoys going to shows with me monthly.

He picks some coins out of the junk bin at the shows and puts them in his book. I let him pick what he likes, but he has to tell me why he wants the coin.

Seems to have an interest in junk paper money as well. Likes notes which are blue.

He will grab and look at a coin magazine with me, also enjoys looking at coin albums.

    Not pushing him at all.

My kids have access to my safe deposit boxes. When I die it will be the first time they have seen a coin outside of pocket change or in between the sofa cushions. Less then zero interest

Too bad you don’t have any cats. Then you could toss any of the lower tier companies slabbed coins into the kitty litter box and let the cats tell you what they think! ;)

@Colonialcoin The only problem with that is that the dogs like to fish out the chocolate covered kitty treats, if you know what I mean... :s:s:s Salem the cat did decide to walk across my 7070 album yesterday as I had it open in my lap looking at it though! :D

Sounds like you have your hands full! You have to teach your pets to handle the raw coins by the rims only.

I take my 4 year old son with me to the local coin shop, a small town coin show that I go to from time to time and anyplace else I may be going to add to my collection. He loves the coin shop because they have the display cases that rotate mechanically and he can scroll through all the coins. We always look for an affordable indian head cent to fill a hole in "our book". We will fill the better dates when he's old enough to understand. I don't force him to do any of it. He see's me with my coins and always asks questions and asks to help. I just hope he remembers taking these rides with me and remembers it fondly enough to keep an interest in the hobby.

Yes I have. My son has a handle on it but my daughter has no interest what so ever.

She asked and I was explaining to her the lettering and numbers on the slabs just last week. I was surprised she asked the difference between 09S Indian and 09S Lincoln. Normally she likes blast white silver. After the show she said she would collect world coins if she started to build a set. Not pushing her in any direction.

I just bought a couple of Whitman penny albums for my 6-yr-old grandson. Next week, during my weekly 1-on-1 with him, our activity will be trying to fill the slots with coins from a sizable jar I have. At first it will be a game or challenge. I'm hoping it will be somewhat educational -- and perhaps he'll get a little intrigued and want to move on to nickels, then dimes, etc. It might stick, and it might not. But at least it will be an introduction where I can show my enthusiasm, and we'll see.

My strategy is about collecting what I intend to keep, not investing in what I plan to sell.

Don’t sell the inherited collection at a pawn or small time coin shop !!! I have instructions in the will to sell at GC. My oldest son collected as a young teen so he may find his way back to coins when he’s older - that was my path. My two youngest have zero interest. I have a box of twenty set aside for each kid with instructions to sell the rest at GC

I taught them to avoid doing the things their old man did/ does. So far, so good.
