PAN Show Report

As some of you are no doubt aware, the PAN fall show had to switch its date this year to avoid conflicting with Baltimore. Unfortunately, that placed it on the same weekend as Gettysburg.
I played hooky from work and arrived at the show when it opened at noon on Thursday. I was happy to see plenty of cars in the parking lot. I’m told that we lost seven dealers to Gettysburg, and Reeded Edge was at half strength, as Rob and Robbie split forces to attend both. There was some concern that dealer-to-dealer sales were down on Wednesday. However, the collector traffic on Thursday seemed normal to me. I suspect that even in a typical year, most of the attendees are from the Pittsburgh metro area.
My favorite part of coin shows is seeing things that don’t pop up on my usual eBay searches. It’s easy to forget how broad the hobby really is - US, world, ancients, paper, medals, exonumia… I love the sense of discovery.
My other favorite part of coin shows chatting with the interesting and knowledgeable dealers. I was happy this time to catch up with some old friends and make some new ones.
The result is almost inevitably that I purchase a coin or two that I never would have thought to. For example, I knew these existed, but would never have thought to look for one. But when I got chatting with a dealer about encased coins, somehow the topic wandered to irradiated dimes, and the rest is history:
Likewise, I couldn’t pass up this interesting combination of old gold and favorite slab, once I got talking with the gentlemanly Mr. George Watson:
It is always interesting to me to see how differently things are priced at coin shows than on the internet. Changes in spot metal prices seem to trickle down to the coin show immediately, and the greysheet is widely consulted. But one area that seemed a decade behind was classic commems. There were a couple of Connecticuts that I would have considered for my grading set, if only the prices weren’t 2 grades too high (and non-negotiable). I agree, they are cool coins and undervalued. But insisting that they are worth more than buyers will pay won’t fix that!
Anyways, I had a great time at the show, with excellent transactions on both the buying and selling fronts. I’d love to hear impressions from my fellow Pittsburghers, especially about the Friday and Saturday crowds.
PAN is a great show, and I hope this years scheduling snafu is just a minor bump in the road!

Thanks for the report. Good info there. I had a Classic Commem type set that I sold in the 90's. Got out at the right time. Maybe time to look at that venue again or not. Thanks again.
Nice report and gold ... thanks for sharing.
That’s a great looking gold coin.
Nice report and very nice acquisitions.... I like the gold coin very much....Cheers, RickO
Thanks for the report! Love the detail on the 2 esc. I've never seen an irradiated dime before. Probably safe, but I still wouldn't carry it in my front pants pocket. Just saying.
Great report.
I love those old little white slabs too, and that is a really cool coin to find in one!
Thank's for the report.
Great report Liz!
Best, SH
Love the gold! Thanks for the show report.
Nice report. However, when it comes to the classic commems they are NOT overvalued. There is plenty of supply and very little demand and this has been true for many years. I'm glad to hear that you passed on the overpriced coins you were offered.
Great report
