Theft at a coin store in Ky

At approximately 1pm today a male and female accompanied by a small child went into Cherokee Coins in Louisville,Ky and committed a theft involving approx $29,000 in gold coins. The suspect asked for silver and then requested to see gold coins. During the transaction the suspects flashed a large amt of cash and wanted the coins put into small bags and then placed in a box. When the total amt was added up the suspects stated they needed to get additional cash and would be back to pick up the coins. At some point, the suspects were able to take the coins. The small child ran around the store as a possible distraction.

"Shop owners should be alert of individuals using the same MO as above"

Put in bags, in a box, needed to go get more cash, distraction. Hasn't that been used before. Sounds very familiar.

The kid will be charged as an accomplice. No seriously he will be better off with anyone else when his parents are incarcerated. Sad start for that kid.

Years ago, I used to work in a high end camera shop. Some of our cameras were very expensive, top of the line Nikons, etc...and some in the public used to try and pull all sorts of scams like this.

One scammer trick my boss alerted me to was never bring out multiple cameras at once. Show them one camera, and if they want to see another, take that camera back behind the counter, and then bring out another. Only one camera on the counter at a time.

I've never worked in a coin shop, but perhaps the owner here could have done one item and one transaction at a time. Show them say the silver, and if they wanted to buy the silver, complete that transaction with payment, then move on to another item. In my view, having all the items out at one time, is like having all the cameras out at one time.

Of course if it's a good customer, that's different. But with a stranger, security precautions are a must.

Disgusting that they indoctrinate their children in this stuff. I agree with @stevek, they could limit the amount of value to bring to the counter, one coin at a time or less than $2000 in multiple coins. I would be highly suspect and irritated if someone brought a kid to a buy and allowed the kid to aimlessly run around the store. The dealer's "Spidey senses" should have been going off big time.

lots of cash, wanting to buy lots of coins the dealer is thinking $$$$ not about that he is fixing to get took, see some people only have eyes for $$$ and this M.O hits that weakpoint, and yes scammers are looking for such people

I don't think that the parents necessarily "indoctrinate" the child. Kids will be kids. Just let them loose and mommy and daddy can perp all they want.

And that bankroll the scammers flashed with likely a $100 bill showing on the outside, probably had nothing but $1 bills on the inside.

Putting out multiple coins is a bad error.... even most jewelry stores will only let you look at one item at a time....Sorry for their loss, but procedures must be put in place that will prevent this. Cheers, RickO

Sad to hear of this episode, and of children being used like that. As an aside, I once had a suburban "soccer mom" type let her hyperactive kid pretty much destroy my exam room, in the hopes that to get rid of her I would just write rx's for oxycodone. Didn't work.

The owner was not there. The crooks might have waited until the assistant was in charge.
