Wow, that was a little surprising. Not that it is a bad coin, but the gap between what I thought the grade would be and what it was actually given by PCGS was fairly significant. (I was thinking MS64.)
If it were in an ICG holder of similar grade people would be jumping all over it... I guarantee that as a raw coin it would be tough to get even a quarter of that value on a good day.
I was lampooning myself as I was so far off on the grade............aka........joke...joking....i.e. self deprecating humor.
Broomsticks? Broomsticks?
And I personally appreciate the nuances of coin grading, but wouldn't pay 63 money for that coin and that's just me.
Many others really like a coin like that.
I've seen the coin in hand. It doesn't look any better. The surfaces are clean of any notable marks, but the luster and eye appeal are sub-par. I can't believe it went for $1200.
By comparison, here's a 31S I purchased for $360 with a few dings but much better luster and toning. You can really tell the difference in luster when comparing the TrueViews.

Nice !!!
Since the other one you recently posted is a 60...I will say this one is too
Or....
The toning is throwing me off... I really don't see any "wear" , so I'm going to venture a guess at MS6x-something... idk...

I don't see any wear or dings, but that toning could cover a multitude of sins. Without seeing in hand it's a wild guess. 64.
NON FB MS 63 peach splash toning
I have one that looks like the teenage version of yours. Just give it 20 more years .... ps: I think mine is the same grade as yours.
If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.
Tommy
No disrespect, but that tarnish is horrid.....it looks like dried tobacco juice.... Sorry, JMO.... Cheers, RickO
From the pictures it looks like a solid MS65 no band coin.
Ken
MS-63 no FSB. Strike on the obverse is not the best. Reverse also looks a little mushy.

I can't grade a coin like this by a pic. Could be any grade.
Judging from your image, I would call it an AU. I’d have to see something like that in hand to see if there is some pop under the toning.
@Hallco. Note to self...do not buy heavily toned raw Mercury Dimes because you do NOT know how to grade them! Lol. WOW!!!
Ditto!!

Well I was wrong, mine's a 67, no +. Maybe in twenty years ...

Tru View of the coin. Looks much better.

Woof, woof, woof, woof, woof... Who let the dogs out?
Wish I hadn't opened this thread as this gorgeous vomit patina just can't be unseen
Environmental damage was my thought.
I'll bet it looks nice in person.

Small coins with busy toning are tough enough to grade in hand let alone by photo.
The 31S is outstanding. Thanks for sharing.
totally!!
Its an older submission, looks under-graded, I bet it gets 66 easily on any day, with a + for good measure.
Like!
I was originally thinking MS64 also. Can someone please explain why it is an MS67+ or what I am missing. Since I don't collect this series.
Thank you.
