BUSTED AT PARSIPPANY COIN SHOW! THIEF CAUGHT RED HANDED!

This morning the Parsippany coin show attendees were treated to a special treat when a public attendee- thought to have been the thief in the previous 2 months of stolen coins (including https://tapinto.net/articles/rare-silver-dollar-stolen-from-parsippany-coin-sh was caught red handed slipping coins under the table.
Dealer Vinny Blum who was one of the victims last month coordinated the sting operation with the local show security. As the perp sat down to view coins at Vinny's table, his body motions were being monitored on both sides by security. While attempting to ask prices on certain coins, he slid others under the table.
His actions were spotted and he was approached and kept in place while he was searched. Mr. BLums as well as another dealers coins were found on his persons and he was arrested and taken away by police.

Nice!! It would be great if they could make them sit restrained in a chair with a couple cops standing guard and wear a sign that says "I Stole Coins From Here", of course this would be after they served jail time. It's amazing how much of a deterrent public shaming is.

At least caning which is still used in some cultures too.

Outstanding!! Really glad to hear this. I hope a search of the culprits home turns up previously pilfered coins. He will likely only get a short sentence.... so watch for his return. These thieves rarely change.... They think of all the times they were successful.... and then try to improve their methods while incarcerated. Cheers, RickO

Warrant to search his residence is fitting
Don Blau who does that show was robbed of six figures at that show some years ago, never turned up any of the purloined inventory. Others like Steve Vorchheimer who lost six figures in numismatics also never got anything back. Situational awareness is tough in numismatics because most people never expect this.
Possibly it is because one-handed thieves are less of a problem. What goes on in a different culture may work for them but I'm thankful we don't do that here. Perhaps It is better to house, feed, clothe, educate, medicate, and take care of folks who break the rules for the rest of their lives. We are a great country!
I agree. We need to understand all our criminals, interview them so we can incorporate more therapeutic social conditions and give them the help, psychological counselling and moral rehabilitation they obviously need.

It is more insidious than just the loss of a hand. In that culture, as with many in the Asian / Middle Eastern, everyone was forced to be right handed. You ate out of communal bowl and table, eating the with right hand, as the left hand was used to clean your hindquarters. No right hand: banished from communal eating, society, etc.
When I was overseas, the children were AMAZED that someone could write their language with the left hand. I might as well have been writing with my foot. Being a little devious, while I was speaking in their language (not great, but passable) I popped out my retainer (I had a .50 cal barrel to the face, lost 4 teeth, things were spaced back around, but I had a gum colored plastic retainer with a back wire to keep things correct, and it was not visible from the front) and when I popped it out, I could only talked slurred and guttural sounds.
TOTAL shock. It was like I had come from outer space. Even the adults had no frame of reference as to what had just happened, how I had popped out part of my mouth, and could pop it back in again, and be able to talk.

I was discussing a while back a story of a man who was gunned down while running away for stealing a drink (A drink for a life, sounds fair). Some were YAY the bad guy was gunned down. One person said “my father taught me that you don’t steal because you go to jail”. My response was “why should you have the luxury of going to jail when you are here praising someone being shot down for stealing”? “Shouldn’t YOU also be shot down like an animal for stealing”? Of course then it had everything to do with race.
Why do people who think of all the punishments having to do with mutilation or torture always think it doesn’t or won’t apply to them or worse their children or family members? Anybody remember the dude who stole a poster from North Korea? (A poster for a life, seems reasonable). We might not like the punishment handed down but we have a court system for a reason and I'm beginning to think it's to protect ourselves from each other.

My grandfather told me stories of having his left hand smacked with a wooden rod for writing left handed. He was forced to become right handed. Would have been around 1906. Sorry to get off topic. was interesting to hear about them eating right handed and it brought my memory back about my grandfather.

Wow, just...wow. don't know where you live or the kind of folks who are there, but perhaps consider moving. There are still nice places with great people, plenty of them. Really.

The problem with living in a Civilized society is that there are Uncivilized people living in our society we have to deal with. Until you can civilize them, we are living in a dangerous and uncivilized society. Just because you happen to be isolated and removed from that society because of your immediate position or status or location doesn't mean that society doesn't exist.
