Sometimes Even The Guy Who Writes The Book Can Get Cherry Picked.
A little over a month ago I received a PM from a New Member @Jay4202472000 Telling me that he had Found a 1952 D DDO 101 WQ Raw and since I knew the series and he saw the link to my registry set he thought that I might be interested in this coin. What amazed me was he sent me clear beautiful pictures that showed the doubling perfectly. I asked where he found this coin? He told me that one night he woke up in the middle of the night and thought he would do his searches on Ebay. Now most folks know that JT Stanton sells coins on Ebay and most of us variety guys would think not to look as he did write the book. This early morning he saw this 1952 d quarter and knew it was the ddo so he did the make an offer button.
Meanwhile he went to pcgs price guide and realized the price on the coin and went back to just do the BUY IT NOW. Alas the coin was sold. What's funny the offer was accepted I think at 3 am and he actually did get this coin. So he started to do research at Heritage and saw the last MS 64 sold for 700 or 840 with the Juice. Now I passed on that coin because I just did not care for the look. So seeing the pictures he had sent me I thought the coin was a easy MS 64. I told Jay that I could not make a fair offer on the coin without getting it in the pcgs slab.
He told me he did not have a membership and no dealers nearby to submit the coin for him. I realized I had my voucher for 4 coins and always have coins sitting around waiting to be sent in. I told Jay I could send the coin in for him and that if the coin graded at least MS 64 I would be interested. He was blown away that I would send the coin in for him and I explained the cost in which he offered to pay ahead of time. I told him to just send the coin and no cash and if the coin graded right we could just work out a deal on the grading.
He sent me the coin within one week and in hand I really thought this coin had a great chance of becoming a New Top Pop at MS 65. Sent in four coins and decided to just use my voucher for the Gold Shield as those include a free True View. Less than 3 weeks after our host got my coins grades popped. This coin now ties 6 others for the top pop at MS 64. I was surprised it did not grade higher and to me is the nicest looking 64 out of the coins pictured in coinfacts. I contacted Jay and told him the good news and we both agreed on a Great Deal. So now this coin is going to Join my registry set and with another Great story.
To me this is what makes putting this set together so much fun. Each coin you add should have a story of where it comes from and why it fits in with the set. It is also cool that there are new members who actually do there own research on coins they find. Congrats again to Jay for Finding and helping to add another Variety to my set. 49 to go........
Thanks for Looking and Enjoy Tom

I think not. Everyone misses one every now and then.
Perhaps he was happy to be rid of a very minor variety with a very thin market that had failed to find a buyer for a long time?
So your saying he would just toss away an easy $500+ just because it is a minor variety? Don't be ridiculous.
500.00? Sure you didn't mean 5.00. J/K
Great story. Congrats. That coin needs to be resubmitted at some point in the future. Too nice for a 64.
Just who is going to pay $500 for something like that?

Congratulations !!!
Everything Tom wrote is spot on except for 2 things. One was the time (It was between 6 & 7 am on a Sunday I think). The other was why I contacted him.
I had just joined here and was reading a thread where members were upset that PCGS was getting the variety attributions wrong, or leaving it off entirely. One member (I can't remember who, but I wouldn't call them out if I could) was upset that the 1951-D Washington they sent didn't get the FS-101 designation. I took one look at LIBERTY and realized the member had been tricked by the master hub doubling seen on CONECA Obverse Design Variety 005 (ODV-005). That particular ODV was used from 1951-1954 and exhibits doubling on IGWT, the underside of the nose, and earlobe. Wexler and Wiles do not mention the nose and ear, but it is there. Look at enough BU coins from the date range and you will see. Wexler also has a small mistake in his comments about the master hub obverse.
http://doubleddie.com/1837225.html
WMHO-001 & ODV-005 are the same master hub, FYI. Wexler says ALL coins from 1951-1954 have this doubling, but ODV-006 was also used in 1952. On ODV-006, IGWT is much thinner, as is LIBERTY, and no master hub doubling is present. 006 is the obverse hub used on Variety Vista's 1952D-DDR-001. I was searching for this DDR when I found Tom's new addition. This particular DDR is cool to me because it it a (Class III) business strike reverse over a proof reverse. So you could say it's a Type A/Type B. Sorry for the tangent, just adding to the story.
Anyway, I didn't want my first post to be me jumping in, looking like a know-it-all, and telling a fellow variety collector PCGS was right, when no one here knew me at all. I am here to make friends after all, not pee folks off from the start. Not long after, Tom showed up and said PCGS was right, and it was not the FS-101. That was when I knew I needed his advice on what to do with the coin.
Also, I am only speculating, as I don't know many of you guys yet, but I am assuming the members on the "minor variety" train are either going solely on the image Tom provided, or didn't research this particular DDO. It is definitely not the strongest of the series, but it is FAR from a minor DDO. Here are some images of her before Tom had her put in jail!
Tom, I thank you again greatly for your help and am very glad it worked out for us both.
It was unattributed. It was listed as a normal 1952-D.
Actually I paid more than 500 and if you look at the others in coin facts you would understand. Jay was super happy and I was Happy. Price guide is 1650 Not that it means anything...I just think its cool how some coins come into our collections.
Hey Jay, nice to see you stop by and love your pictures. Those really show the doubling on this coin. You will fit in here just fine with pictures so clear. Welcome to the Boards and thanks again for the coin...
Enjoy Tom

One thing that I wanted to mention....that most people would skip on by....
The OP (1tommy) is a stand-up guy. He did this for his fellow collector, and went into it with no expectations and, when things worked out anyway, he stepped up.
I know how he did this because, while not privy to anything on this particular deal, he did similar (though, my WQ wasn't worth near as much) with me, a couple of years ago. I had something, minor, no idea what it was worth (bought a few because they were nice/lightly toned and my mother's birthyear, and I was making a present for her, so wanted to give her a choice on which one), and, when I found out there was something about them, Tom stepped in and stepped up.
Still think PCGS should have graded them a little higher, but it is what it is.
So, Tom doesn't only know his stuff, but, first and foremost, he is willing to share his knowledge with no expectations, and help out fellow collectors. Also, when he does purchase, I have found him extremely fair on his offer.
Great guy, great member here.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
Very cool it worked out for all. I some times just let them sit even if I see one to let the next guy pick it keeps the blood pumping for all. It's just me dumb Type2 thinking.
Hoard the keys.
Toss it away? We don't know what Jay paid for it.
@1tommy
Wonderful story and more Beautiful is your kindness.....May it returned to you 10fold
@Jay4202472000....Welcome aboard... and great pictures....Also a super story @1tommy ... Cheers, RickO
I got it for $16 shipped. It was a BIN/OBO @ $14.99 + $2.99 shipping. My offer was accepted @ $12.99.
Cherry pick? No way. That was robbery! Well done! As the statue in Animal House says at Faber College, "Knowledge Is Good."
Tom,
Great story. Of course Jay could not have picked a better WQ variety expert to examine that coin than Tom. I have had numerous conversations with Tom and he has always helped me identify coins for my collection. Without Tom I would not be a variety collector in this series.

Welcome aboard, Jay, nice to have another knowledgeable variety guy in the fold here.
