How does one even display such a vehicle except in a secure car barn? Obviously, theft is not a problem since the care is effectively unique and extremely difficult to sell to anyone with the ego to buy it. (Doubt insurance could be purchased; although it's a nice problem to have.)
Mine's Almost in that Class, and red is it's original color. A lot fewer zero's though, and I drive the snot out of it. Tires are lucky to make 6 months with rooster tail burnouts.
1969 Shelby, 428 Police Interceptor 4 speed 9" locker rear, and yes, it's a magnet.
It's great that Greg Whitten, the previous owner, raced it. His appreciation of racing history reminds me of Jim Glickenhaus a bit. Jim collects classic racing cars but creates new ones to race.
Greg Whitten, who joined Microsoft in 1979 as its 15th employee and sold the car, said it's been a better investment since he bought it for one-tenth its selling price in 2000.
[...]
Whitten said he bought the car to race in vintage car races and once got it up over 155 mph.
"It's a beautiful car, but it's not whole until you are racing it," he said.
Yet over time, as vintage racing was opened to a wider variety of cars, Whitten said that he had a hard time racing the car against more powerful, newer cars. And he said the owners of less expensive cars could become careless on the racetrack around the far more valuable GTO — so it was no longer as fun to race and to own.
"Some of these people don't have respect for the car," he said. "If they crash it it's not a big deal."
Even though he sold his GTO, Whitten said he still has "about a dozen" other Ferraris and he hopes to purchase plenty of other classic race cars.
[...]
Whitten, who was the 15th employee of Microsoft and joined in 1979, said he doesn't buy cars as investments – but to be driven and raced.
Here's an in-motion photo and additional commentary:
Greg says he’ll miss the car, as it’s one of the most fun to drive, which is saying a lot for a guy with two La Ferraris and a host of other exotics. He knows it’s widely considered the most valuable car ever to go to auction. But the 250 GTO isn’t about the dollar value. Greg is right. It’s about the soul. It’s about authenticity. It’s about sitting in the seat of champions.
I have been told in no uncertain terms that a car is not a sports car unless it's red.
Thus, all my cars have been charcoal grey. If a local law enforcement official should radar a red car and my car at the same time and have to decide which to pull over, he will pull over the red one. Or the BMW/Mustang. Because they look faster.
It's happened several times, so it seems to be more than coincidence. (I drive a lot, in case my handle didn't say that.)
But It shure is a purdy car....

Actually, a car like THAT: you could pretty much total it, rebuild the entire thing and it would still sell for pretty close to that.
I think it was J Giels that said that about one of his Ferrari's when someone asked him why he drove his million dollar car to a car show.

Agreed. We discussed this at our local car show this past weekend. The new cars are readily available with 500 to 800 hp and stopping power that the old cool cars never had. Throw in heated seats and steering wheel, AC, 900 watt 18 speaker sound systems, automatic everything, and it's easy to see why some have moved to the new muscle/pony cars.
Yep ... so true. My dad (who is 77) just picked up a 2013 Mustang Boss 302 and it's incredible. Not massive HP (only 444), but remarkably well balanced. He finds it scary fast ... and he used to race cars. He likens it close to the original Boss 302 as a 'buy it on Sunday and race on Monday' kind of car.
One of the most 'fun for the dollar' cars I have owed was my 1994 Miata R. It drove like a four-wheel motorcycle. By the numbers it was not fast ... but the 'seat of the pants' experience (especially on the track) was quite memorable. Wreck it? No problem. They were so cheap as to be nearly disposable.

I have often wondered when the low to mid-level "collector/classic" cars would start to suffer from the competition of the newer models. And it's not just about straight-line speed (which is considerable) but overall amenities, handling, braking, etc.
Well, the time is now I guess. When muscle cars go for 100k, just what are you getting other than nostalgia. Cars such as the OP have a lot more going for them, artistic value, etc.
Love that Milled British (1830-1960) Well, just Love coins, period.
Just like US coins, it is a piece of Americana....er, well, Italian-American anyway. The old saying goes, "They aren't making any more land" (as a truism that supports investment in real estate). Well, they are making a whole lot less of rare, old 250 GTO Ferraris.

The new Mustang, including GT350, has a lot of refinements. An interesting thing is that it has so many refinements that one of my friends got a new Challenger because he said the Mustang was now a sports car, and no longer a muscle car.

It’s not an oval track. Lots of skidding and drifting. On the only straight stretch hit about 135 in fourth and then into a sharp turn at 60 in a blink of an eyelash. You are forced to trust the car at that point. The car is a blast to drive and takes whatever you give it.
