A first for me - bought a PCGS certified coin at antique mall
I went to a small local coin show today and bought a couple things. On the trip back home I decided to stop into a nearby antique mall. This is the kind where multiple different vendors have permanent booths and/or display cases. Each vendor is responsible for their own booth content. When you see something in a locked case that you want to get a closer look at, you ring a nearby bell and someone comes to take the item out for you.
A few of the display cases had coins here and there. Even without taking a closer look, I could tell the "1882-CC" Morgan in one case was a modern (Chinese) make. Another case had three US pattern dollars (Amazonian, Metric, and one other one I forget now). Of course, even at a distance, all three were obviously modern non-silver Chinese manufacture. The vast majority of the coins in this mall were common and priced far higher than similar things at the coin show I had just come from.
Then I spotted another case with just a few coins, along with various other stuff. Sitting face down in the case was this coin. I bought it. Out the door for $80 total. Not a tremendous deal, but I liked the coin for the early holder and the pastel toning. I think this is the first certified coin I ever bought at an antique store.

Very nice Buff... I have never seen a slabbed coin at the antique shops here in town... and one of them is just as you described with independent booths. Yep, I would likely have purchased that one too... Cheers, RickO

Being at an antique mall I wouldn't be surprised if that coin had been on sale since "rattlers" were in actual use by PCGS.

Actually it is a pretty active mall. The coin wasn't there six months ago when I last visited.Several years ago at this same mall I had major scores.
On that visit, when I walked in, I was informed that they were have a special sale that weekend - 20% off everything (they have 15% or 20% discounts from time to time).Way in the far dark corner of one case I spotted what looked like it might be an HK-876 "DENVER 1905" so-called dollar. I rang the bell and when they came to take it out for me to look at, sure enough, it was. It was decent condition, but I've seen nicer ones. I think the booth owner was probably thinking that they were pricing it very high at $225. With the sale discount I bought it for $180 total. Since I already had a nicer one I later sold it for about $500.
But that wasn't the main score. In another booth I spotted a small shadow box priced at $325 with some Olympic pins and medals in it. There were about 20 things ranging from the 1912 Stockholm Olympics up through the 1960 Lake Placid Olympics. I could see it included one of the 1936 Berlin silver participation medals (a genuine original, not a modern copy). That alone is about a $200 item. With discount the whole collection was $280. I bought it and kept 3 of the nicest items for my own collection (including the 1936 Berlin medal). I sold the rest in individual lots on eBay and netted almost 10 times what I paid for the whole lot to start with.
Pickings at the mall had been pretty slim since then, until yesterday.

In the early days of eBay, there were stories like your second story all the time. I once bought a coin collection for $7000. When it arrived in the mail, the face value of the silver coins was higher than that! (Not to mention a gold coin that was hidden in one of the boxes.) It was the very first thing I ever bought on eBay, and it was in 1998.
