This seated quarter walked in to
a local shop in the Kansas City area. Unfortunately the shop owner purchased the coin. I chuckled a little when I saw the pic below.
Just to add a little to the story, the dealer that purchased the quarter grossly lowballed the person who owned it. The owner of the coin accepted the offer because supposedly they knew nothing about coins and claimed that it belonged to a family member. The dealer kind of got lucky that they did not lose more money but at the same time got what they deserved for trying to get a huge rip.

Is the first slab real? That slab insert really looks goofy with that small F.
I did not see the coin in hand but I do know that slabs can be purchased from over seas.
First slab is a fake, with the Xf and wrong bar code.
Slab in Stack's Bowers auction is real.
All of the writing on the label is off from the real thing. The most glaring is the lower case "f".

The barcode on the fake is for a legit 1893 S Morgan in MS 64
That dealer can shop ebay for more just like his and he can rip off those Chinese guys too!

A coin dealer should know better.
How bad of a skinning did that dealer deservedly get? His greed must have blinded him. Though it appears to be a well thought out scam with the numbers matching a recent sale of a genuine piece. Caveat emptor or as they say in Vegas: Greed is the loser's ally.

I don't care for the real one either. Maybe its just the picture, but doesn't look like original surfaces.
You'd think if you were trying to commit fraud you would make the label look exact. The dash in the date is to long and that lowercase F made me chuckle. I guess it is good for us that they aren't the brightest. Nice post!

He didn't try, he did! He is long gone with the money so I guess we can't argue with the results.
The dealer should have gotten the customers info when (s)he bought the "coin"...or did the dealer think that this was too good of an opportunity to do an under the table "deal"?

What is the legality of the situation here? Can the dealer have the individual prosecuted for selling him the fake, assuming he can even find him. Or is it a case of hey I thought it was real too so I took it to the coin shop hoping to get some money.
The would be ripper becomes the rippee. Karma.
I don't care for the real one either, but good for the dealer, he took one , cause he tried to break one off in somebody himself ! serves him right.
