Weirdness in a 1994-S Silver Proof Set
 of 4-17-04 004.jpg)
I pulled a 94-S Silver Proof set out this morning and found this horrible looking environmental damage growing on both sides of the cent.
I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.

Was it stored in a damp area?
Sorry, But it makes a great teaching coin. I gave a Proof Set with environmentally damaged coins to a woman teaching my conservation class (for her future students) and I've always regretted it.
TOUCHED BY THIS GUY .....
That is scary. More than just humidity, that set must have spent some time in the water,
Why is the cent silver?
I could be wrong, but that looks like an after market plated set. What you see is the copper/zinc coin corroding through the plating.

It's an original coin, I just had to tweak it to get the green to show. It was in an auction that I recently won. Don't really know how or where it was stored.

Wow...the classic example of the 'creeping crud'.....There were antibiotics for that in the Navy
Cheers, RickO
I'm confused. So that coin is actually copper colored? Could we see an undoctored picture of the coin and holder?

@UtahCoin, IMO, your original image was just fine. The coin looked pink with dark green corrosion. I wanted to pull your chain and make a joke about needing to see the edge and the reverse but decided to play nice.
I've seen that before, they are beyond ruined!

This is why I would never buy Red copper. Just the littlest thing. I think most people think that Mint packaging and slabs are sealed completely and waterproof. This should disprove that.
At least the packaging in the mid-90's was better than the late-60's to late-70's.
that kennedy looks great. I woulds break the other coins out and call it done.
Best place to buy !

The purple holders from the Mint sometimes exhibit the same thing, unfortunately.

What a rush it must have been when your eyes seen that.

I have had that happen to sets before.
Toast.

Nasty, nasty, nasty. Someone at the mint had an upper respiratory infection and sneezed on the set before closing the slab. Peace Roy
