New Orleans Mint - Different die lengths

The following letter indicates that the large presses at New Orleans Mint in the 1880s accepted dies only in specific die chucks. That is, the obverse dies always had to go in the same position - top or bottom.

Obverse dies were 1-5/16-in long and reverse dies were 2-3/16 long for Standard dollars and eagles.

    This is one of the very few places were US Mint die dimensions are mentioned.

    Thanks Roger... Having been in industries that used presses/stamping machines (not coins) it is interesting to me to see the dimensional information. It is reflective of the type of machinery as well. Cheers, RickO

    Likely an clerk's bored error for "5/16."

    Still, any mint document with actual die dimensions is a rarity.
