This Ike is cool! PO01? 1972 D

Bought this for $5 and it was just too cool to pass up on. I have seen them this worn online a couple of times but never in person. Cool to piece to have and I am hoping to get it sent out to PCGS soon! i think this may have a pretty good chance at becoming a PO01, it has a small rim ding but I am hoping that won't get it details.

    I think it will grade.
    Cool coin for $5.

I love lowballs. Whether or not it straight grades, it's still a great coin.

    Thanks for sharing!

That coin looks "worked" to create a low-ball. I'd call it altered and don't think it will grade.

    I’d bet on it.

    Smitten with DBLCs.

Looking at it again, I think you're right.

    What they said.

Some remaining details are too sharp and defined. Does not have the look of a truly circulation worn coin.

But for 5 bucks a good conversation piece. Plus, you never know. Someone here used to have good luck getting dryer coins slabbed as lowballs.

Well darn I never honestly thought about it being altered. The edge of the coin looks somewhat worn but probably not as much as it should be. What would happen if pcgs deemed it to be altered? Would they end it back unslabbed?

Was the original thickness and shape of the Ike defective? Resulting in unusual wear. Or is this an example of heavy circulation. Thanks. Peace Roy

That definitely appears to be an altered surface...cannot see the edges...Looks like an amateur did this one... Cheers, RickO

No, a heavily circulated coin should not appear as this with beveled edges.

For comparison, here is a 1971 Ike graded by PCGS as Poor-2 from CoinFacts:

The coin in the first post looks like the surface of the coin (especially the obverse) is beveled, like it was buffed with a machine while holding the coin at an angle to the buffing wheel.

the edge looks a little too sharp, but still a cool coin - maybe you could make it your pocket piece a couple years before submitting.

No way that's pocket worn. It had a lot of help, no grade as it is damaged.

I agree that is not even close to natural wear. Do not waste money sending this to PCGS.

It looks as if it has groove marks behind Ike's head. Also marks on his head and in front of his face.

    Not natural wear.

No way has that been in circulation for many years to get into that condition. I have yet to receive an Eisenhower dollar in change, period. Those dollars seldom were in circulation for a long amount of time. I’ve seen kids at coin shops going through tubs of clad Ike’s. They are almost always in VF-XF or better, mainly better. Sometimes, a few dogs are in the tub but they have post mint damage. I’ve never seen a well worn clad coin in any denomination in anywhere close to the shape of that Ike dollar.

I completely agree with you guys, while Ike's do certainly exist in Po01 condition this isn't one. Broke out a loupe and looked it over and there are weird marks on the coin. Definitely not natural wear! Still a cool piece for a couple bucks.
