Grade just posted this week as part of a raw submission. Either graded higher or lower than I expected (given an admittedly limited knowledge of the type)

Don't see much wrong with that coin.

    5? 6? 7?

    I'll guess MS66.

A few little marks and scratches, heavier on the reverse, with that little dig between the M and E.
Hard to tell about the luster - if nicer than I think, 62 shot 63. If as it appears, then I'm also in the 58 camp.

First a question: The grade is not posted yet members are commenting that they were too low. how do they know?

The coin is "Unc enough." Note the dark line of friction down the arm. It is a fairly beat up but the color is going to give it a bump. I'm going to guess it is graded MS-64 for that reason. Without the toning, it would not be very attractive.

@Insider2, Using the PCGS certification number, you can get the grade from the PCGS website here: https://www.pcgs.com/cert

Thanks and phooey - NOT worth the trouble. I'll wait for the OP to post it.

Besides, why play guess the grade then? Anyone can look it up - bummer. Furthermore, It would be very nice if the folks who looked the grade up would keep their findings to themselves. Hint, hint!

IMO, the most helpful GTG would show a sharp image of the coin that could be magnified. Then: The ONLY valid guesses would be those where the member posted the reasons why they reached that grade opinion. We could teach each other a lot more about grading than we do now.

Holy Moley... I wasn't as off as Mike, but I still had this as an MS coin..

Edited to add... I wonder if they viewed the toning break on the cheek as wear?

OK, so I guess the coin is graded AU. I'm with the Uncirculated guys.

If I were a collector stuff as this would drive me crazy. Guess that's why we can only guess with an imaged coin. Here is something to think about:

The coin has some obvious wear down the arm. The coin is also a little beat up. Nevertheless, IMHO, the coin is under graded based on the "standards" in use today. Is this coin WORTH AU money or WORTH low MS money?

Those pesky standards keep changing. >:)

I don't think this coin fits that category. IMO, this is a case of the prevailing standards not being applied the same on this coin as for others. There must be a reason on the coin we cannot see. Perhaps it is as easy to understand as the old time dealer used: If the coin has a little friction and no marks, it's probably MS. If it has a little friction and looks as this coin does, it is an AU. The obverse is very marked up when magnified. I still think it will be graded MS one day.

From the photo, that friction seems to be such as is caused by Gulf of Mexico air blowing over it after it was struck.
    :p

That's a nice coin. High AU or low MS, it's pretty!

I agree, it is a pretty coin... but that's about a $250 range in price.

Thanks for the guesses everyone! If you didn’t cheat and look up the cert number :-), PCGS graded the coin AU-55. I thought it would go somewhere in the Ms-62 range, so my ulterior motive for posting it was to draw on the collective wisdom of the board to better understand what I might be missing as far as friction on the high points.

I’m excited to get the coin back in hand to see if there is something else going on that I missed that might have capped the grade. Obverse has a PL look, and I think Phil did a phenomenal job of capturing the color and overall look of the coin in the TrueView.

Looks like it could be a candidate for a gold sticker - so you have that going for you!

As I pointed out that little dig on the reverse previously, I'm wondering if that detracted enough to get it a lower net grade. Frankly even with that, with that nice tone, I still think it's a 58 minimum.
