Happy Friday Folks,
Below is my image of a newp that received the highly sought after gold bean - P53 Gold CAC (2nd coin down). Viewing it in hand, I would put it at 56 for the obverse and 58 for the reverse. What you don't see in the images is the strong luster on both sides. Word has it that to get the gold bean it really has to be super strong for the next grade up at a minimum. I am guessing that a crack out artist would get 58 on this one sooner or later but possibly an accurate grade would be 55+ by current standards. This one I bought with the gold bean on it from CRO, the previous 2 gold beaners I have were awarded the bean after buying and sending in to CAC.

Also shown are 2 others in my collection of the same die marriage, the 1834 B1. This is the Redbook variety called 'O over F in OF' with the top of the O connected to the F by a remnant of what is likely a previous O.

The P45 is an early die state mostly or all free of die clashes and no rotation of the dies relative to each other, what the Rea book calls die state P. It also shows the top of the 'O' in OF on the reverse. There are duplicate claws for the right claws (our left) in the field below eagle claws.

The P53 has some die cracks as the die aged, and a strong clash of the shield bars below the ear on the obverse. The top of the O between OF is now gone, probably from lapping of the dies, and not shown, the reverse is rotated clockwise relative to the obverse.

The P62 shows double clashes of the shield bars below the ear - take a look at the lower left blow up behind the images that show this very nicely. The reverse is also strongly rotated and shown in the real orientation relative to the observe, more so that for the P53. This late die state example clearly shows the the detached olive branches and the missing extra claws below the eagle, consistent with earlier lapping of the reverse die.

So evolution of the die recorded in 3 coins. This is part of what makes the old coins so fun to collect for me. I will try to find ≥XF45 examples of other die states as I move on. There is alot to this die marrige and it is fairly common so we will see where this goes.

Best, SH
