If you send the same coin in for grading three consecutive times,
to the same grading company, what are the odds that it will receive the same grade every time? I've never attempted this however, my guess is that you would average two different grades. Keeping in mind that although you sent it to the same grading company, chances of the same grader receiving the coin every time are slim.

It all depends on the coin. For that reason I can’t answer this question.
IDK
but grade fees and postage will be 3x's as much.............for sure
Steve
I remember someone posted a Frankie that was submitted a stupid number of times in an upgrade attempt.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

Would it matter if the coin was cracked out and sent in raw or resubmitted for reconsideration?
@MANOFCOINS what did you do?
Send it in and tell us what happened.
I know people that have submitted the same coin 3 or 4 times and gotten exactly the same grade. Other times, with different coins, they've gotten 2 or 3 different grades.

This can be an expensive game....of course, it can also have great rewards.....You pay your money and take your chances... The old carnival chant - also applies to casino gambling.

I knew it would happen.
Once is enough. Heck, I don't even need a sticker , after one trip to NGC, or PCGS. My mantra is : "Leave room for someone else to have fun, too".

Forget 3 times how about 14 times.
I own a 1883 Morgan in 65 DMPL and was looking at the Trueviews in CoinFacts for that date and grade to compare against mine.
As I was clicking through the images I notices the same two coins over and over.
So each coin appears 14 times in the list of images, if I counted correctly
Coin #1 shows up 5 times as a 65+ and 9 times as a 65. (this coin has a stain to the lower right of the eagles wing)
Coin #2 shows up 14 times as 65. (this coin has two small marks on the chin)
So for these two coins it looks like the grading is pretty consistent.
But all it takes is one grading event for one of these coins to end up in a 66 holder to make this effort worth it to the submitter.
The price guide goes 65 $1,750, 65+ $3,000, and 66 $16,000
Hopefully they will send in all of the old cert numbers once they finish their upgrade effort.
But in the meantime the pops are getting distorted.

Fyi, I generally submit my coins for regrade in the existing holder and have received many upgrades.
The regrade in holder doesn't leave behind a trail of all the failed attempts and doesn't distort the pops.
I wonder if the concept of cracking coins out of a holder for a regrade even helps, unless the coin has never been previously imaged by PCGS. Now that all coins submitted at Express service and above are imaged, I would have thought that maybe PCGS is using some kind of image recognition software to identify previously submitted coins and cut down on the upgrades that are given out. Especially if they have the history of coin grading 14 times as a 65 they wont magically let it out the door as 66 because one grading event out many said it's a 66.
Express or walkthrough at the beginning of the ANA = optimal results. But I don't waste that much money or patience on speculation and frustration. Is there any other field where money grades have been sought with all types of ruses used to game the system?
I just cracked a coin out of a straight VF slab and had it come back AU Details for artificial toning. The correct grade should have been 45 or 50, but the (probably original) color is not great. Never mind what the coin is. Things like this can get submitted six times and come back six different ways. On the other hand, a blast white gem 81-S Dollar is going to come back the same way more often than not.

Andy is right. Some coins are very easy to grade consistently, and others have more grey area. Coins with weak strikes (like
"C" and "D" mint circulated gold for example), or coins on the AU 58/Mint State line can come back with different grades upon multiple submissions. Generally if you're spending 6 figures a year (or more) year after year on grading, chances are you are winning overall more often than not. A very good poker player has an edge...so does a very good grader.
If I’m not mistaken, this test is documented in the book “Official ANA Grading Standards for United States Coins“ with some Standing Liberty Quarters.
I’ll have to go back and review it.

I'm not sure how true this is but we can all be sure the grading services are winning overall.

Need some specification as to what and which coins are to fetch the higher grade on......
Rare and highly sought ones may make sense to spend the extra expenditure and it would be peanuts compare to the promise of the desired grades IMHO
PerryHall...if you're not coming out ahead on what you spend on grading fees, then you either have way too much money or
you are crazy. As I know most of the top submitters, I stand by my comment...and grading companies ALWAYs come out ahead so that is a given.
Or one has bad judgment......

If you look at the CLCT stock price they sure want us to send in the same coin three times.
I once bought a raw 1875-S Trade $ off eBay and sent it to Pcgs for grading. It came back genuine-UNC. details/ Questionable color. I dipped the coin and sent it in again, this time it came back as UNC. details/Cleaned. I waited a few months and sent it in a third time and got the grade I expected the first time......MS-62+
I'd suspect the outcome would me less consistent than marrying the same woman 3 times?
I had three Lincoln cents get body-bagged years ago on their first grading attempt. Felt they were not AT. Send them back and I got a 66 and two 65's.
Gotta go with your gut some times.
Very Interesting!! Thanks for the info. When was this?
I bought a NGC coin from HA for over 10K and send to PCGS to cross two times and both came back as fake. I also send in couple coins to cross from NGC to PCGS some got cross the second time but some still not cross. I am not sure if I want to send them third time. I also sent in one for reconsideration and got upgrade from AU50 to AU53. I cracked out couple coins but not yet submit them yet. I want to let them sit on my both room for a year before I submit them. LOL
Did you crack it out when you resent it?
I did crack it out each time and this was probably 5 years ago.
So sounds like crack it out has a better chance to get better grade.
