Thoughts/Value on this 1922D Toned Peace Dollar

Davidk7Davidk7 Posts: 680 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hello everyone, my name is David, and i am a new member on here but I've been on Coin Community for a couple years. Glad to be here! I'm undertaking the advice of Sam Shafer, to post a particular coin on here, and Coin Talk for some expert opinions, and a value. The coin in question is a 1922-D Peace Dollar, 100% toned. It's an absolutely beautiful coin in hand. I bought it off ebay years ago for $40, and i'm 100% certain the toning is real. I'm looking for opinions on eye appeal, thoughts, and most definitely a value. I can't find another toned Peace to compare it to. I sent it off to NGC during SUMMER FUN (joined ANA for this perk), and as expected it went UNC details AT. I understand the grading services are tough on toned coins, especially peace dollars. Anyways, apologies in advance for the not-so good pics. I tried my best but it's hard to photograph through a slab, so I also included some pics before I sent it in. Thanks!

Welcome. Some of the toning looks natural, but it also looks like it had some "help". Looks like there are lots of hits in the prime focal areas. No idea on value, sorry I can't help with that part. The coin does look like it has a good strike. How is the luster?

The luster is dim on the obverse due to the toning being dark green, but still there, while the reverse has more visible luster. Coin pops bright in sunlight, especially on the reverse.

Looks fresh out of the oven. :) Welcome to the forum. As far as I can remember on here the toned peace dollars are rare and usually AT. Buyer beware of the raw stuff.

The TPG (Third Party Grader) was correct.

Welcome to the forum! Why are you 100% sure the coin is NT? It looks questionable to me but it doesn’t scream AT like many do. I agree that the overall look is nice and I bet you could get your money out of it even in that holder. Of course if you like the coin but hate the holder you could always crack it back out.

Sorry, Looks AT to me. I like toned Peace Dollars and search daily on eBay as well as major auction houses for them. Vivid Easter egg colors on Peace Dollars are almost always going to get AT grades. I’ve seen a few with subtle pastels that are light and visible when tilting the coin back/forth get straight grades. .
Also FYI Jerseycat collects and is very knowledgeable about toned Peace Dollars

Thanks to all for the welcome!

I've had dealers who specialize in toned coins tell me it's legit, and told me it's a $1-2K coin straight graded, while just dealers who specialize in rare coins weren't sure. As well, the toning definitely isn't textbook, but no one can really know the environment which it was toned in which I understand is why people think AT. I was informed this Peace looks like it was stored either in a sulphur rich environment (ex between pulp comics) or was toned by leather/wood environment. I've been reading about toning for years as this Peace has stumped me, and I've seen so many AT coins over the years that are blatantly terrible, and in hand this coin just does not set the warning bells off in my head. I've never seen a baked coin, or an AT for that matter look close to this. Something that I had read that I've kept in mind was that Peace Dollars were stored differently, and the planchet rinses, alloys etc are also why they tone differently.

The coin itself is pretty dark and the toning isn't seen unless I angle it towards light. In hand without light the coin is dark and subtle, while in light it pops.
