Guess the Grade: 1946-P 50c Old ANACS

I'm falling in love with collecting small ANACS holders. These wavy cartwheel gorgeous lustrous little things are BEAUTIFUL. I was going to keep up on rattlers but I love these, how they feel, their heft and size.

Any guesses on the grade?

I used yellow light for details and ambient light for (hopefully) color luster and surfaces.

Photos 3 and 6 below are probably closest to in hand example. I tried to get different areas on the last 4 pictures.

I’m in at 63. There are some bothersome marks on both sides that bother me.

I'm bothered by that long abrasion in the right facing field. There's a bit of chatter on the center skirts, as well.

MS 63 shot at 64.

I wasn't sure if the 'long abrasion in the right field' mentioned was on the coin or the holder - I think it's the holder, and I think the holder grade is MS64.

Anyone else like these? Yes, I like the convenient size. I have a nice grouping of large cents in these holders that I posted awhile back.

i am in the 63 camp,no expert on walkers tho, question, i am curious, how much of a scratch is needed b4 it gets a details grade, "scratch on obv", i have an 1875cc trade dollar that ngc gave a details grade, "scratch on rev" and i can barely see a scratch, any insight would b appreciated, thanks

I love the small ANACS holders. My favorite of the small ANACS holders are without a doubt the first generation ANA holder though. As you start getting into the more recent holders with serial numbers above 6 digits, the grading can become a bit questionable.

As for the grade on this particular Walker, it's tough to tell. Is that big mark directly above the G in GOD on the holder or the coin? If it's the holder, then I would guess MS-64 shot 65. If it's on the coin, then MS-63.

I'm going with 64. I thought 65 for a bit, since the strike is quite nice....but enough hits to keep it 64.

Now....what ANACS said at the time? Don't really have a grasp of the history to answer that question....

They are very tight on grades for these from what I've read. Also, there are still of course the 55 details that caught 63 and blahblah. Generally most people said +/- 1-2 points. I could see this as a 63 but also a 64. At least part of her hand is there, and the scratch or whatever isn't visible when handling the coin. I don't know if it's the luster keeping my eyes away from it.

I have searched Google and coin forums for awhile looking at examples and examples of coins I can grade better.

I've wanted one for awhile and have been watching the market and what floats around for the past few weeks. It was only a few dollars after ebucks on my wife's account.

I do enjoy having different generation slabs, also. I had a few ANA slabs go by that had two letters and a census thread here noted that they hadn't been collected.

I also heard they're very easy to crack open by the corners.

Oh and there's a small chip/scratch on the camera lense I used in some of the pictures. Maybe why it appears and disappears?

There's a mark right behind her for sure. Please let me know if you are other anomalies it'd be appreciated.

I goofed on reverse pics and now it's all put away.

Oh I see now. That line kills it. It kind of blends with the circle of the coin and the thin almost invisible line outside. Thankfully the L isn't a hit and just color. The bottom most left of her skirt is what appears to be a failed attempt and putting the ray through her gown and not a gouge or something like I had originally thought. I bet a staple got it with that line. It appears to be three close grooves that something small and sharp moved fast back and forth.
