I just did an ..uncomfortable... thing.

Sorted my coins today into "irreplaceable" (kinda) or .... "hard for me to find" and now I think a heavy sale is in order.

I've done that many times and I'm about to do it again. Always a good thing.

It's a never-ending process, for me anyway. I'm finally far enough away from not having to do anything with my treasures. Thank god since that was getting old!
I did that too and sold off the other stuff. Then as time passed on more and more, instead of being "impossible" v. "hard to find," I categorized them into "prime market material - ready to sell" v. "hold until the market improves."
May I request a Private Showing?
In that case, you're not buying enough coins!

What a horrible thought... That would be like separating family members... No way... Love them all.....
Cheers, RickO
Who here thinks RickO could use a "coin counselor?"

Hope it works out for you.
I have enough trouble selling extra's.

I wish I ...had... RickO's perspective. Used to.
Anyhow, this is only the initial stage of something that probably will not happen.
I actually DID it about a year or two ago and dumped some stuff that I don't even recall now.
Could be the opposite. I may take a bath in Philly this August.
But.....whether I do or not.... there will be a cash infusion of a minor nature.
And...either licking my wound, or gathering moxie, I'll most likely end up adding MORE ...stuff... to the barrel.
It's a sickness. You all know that.
I don't know WHAT I'd do if I had Hansen's trillions.

Irreplaceable vs hard to find? I feel like my coins would fall into multiple other categories as well. @topstuf are you saying that all of your coins only fall into one of those two categories and you plan to only keep the irreplaceable ones?
I have many coins which I love dearly that can easily be replaced.
I just did that for the first time since I started collecting 13 years ago. It's a very useful and uncomfortable exercise that I believe will overall benefit my long-term collection.
I suppose LITERALLY I'd have to cop to the same thing.
In my assessment, I take into account some stuff that isn't apparent.
If I waited a long time (even if just to get the guts to pull the trigger) it still garners a "story" in my book.
While you're not ...supposed... to collect emotionally, I don't think most can avoid it.
?????????????
Topstuf, you have VERY nice coins, the coins I'd dream about having as a kid. Enjoy the ones you're keeping and cull the ones you're not. You've done it before, it'll be done, then you can focus on maybe one new special thing to add. Rinse and repeat as much or as little as you like.
I DEFINITELY collect "emotionally" and can relate. In my case, I sold a coin once to free up some money, fully intending to get an acceptable level at a lower grade; it was accomplished within days but I definitely "felt" that missing coin. Is what it is I guess.
Of course you do.

It must be contagious...three stacks;
can't let go,
don't want to let go
and get 'em outta here.

I just sold my avatar coin... which was one of my favorite gold toners. Ultimately, I am trying to make sure my coin hobby does not hurt us financially. I had a good offer for it, and after some hard thought, decided it was the time to let it go. I try not to be too connected to "things".
MY weakness (fail, regret, fun) is that I see a coin now that I think is cool, cool, cool, and .....almost do the BIN and then begin to project if I will spend the money to admire that coin and apply the ...."reasoning" of asking myself if it's ..WORTH.. it to get the darn thing and then ask myself if I want to commit to something that will gratify me for a week or so and then become something that I will decide was a ....precipitous purchase that won't.....

Oh, the curse of the temporary madness.
I totally agree, Ricko. I've always felt that way about my collection.

The only time I sell a coin is, if it has a problem, or if it's something that I can easily replace.
