Seated Half - Tooled!

On ebay - I thought the right side of the drapery looked funny - then I compared with a genuine image and the tooling stands out like a sore thumb! What appears to be an otherwise nice circulated half was tooled by some "tool" :'(

I think the entire coin looks funny? Are you sure the coin is genuine?

Your coin has a bad repair job. Usually indicates that a mount was removed from center of the coin.

    Yes, it’s been reengraved.

Interesting - I had been pondering why the shield appears to be higher grade than the rest of the obverse, and I don't believe that had been re-engraved, as the areas that obviously were are sloppy.
Perhaps the 'mount' protected the shield area?

Why mess up a part of the coin that is still "original?" I've got a Seated dime with the button loop still attached to the center of the obverse.

Not my coin, and still for auction on ebay. Yes, I scratch my head as to why someone would tool this coin - probably worth $150 or so without the tooling, now worth $5!

LSH reverses showing the eagle were often used as buttons or cufflinks in the 19th century. As a result, LSH's with a soldiered and engraved obverse are fairly common on Ebay. In most cases, the damage was done when they were worth face value over a century ago, the reengraving was done relatively recently to salvage some value. This specimen is a pretty crude example.

It looks as if (as @Insider2 said) it has been tooled to remove the traces of a mount (button stem or cuff link post)... in an attempt to sell as original... Cheers, RickO

Interesting - now the funky look on the coin makes sense, thanks for the insight! I would think 50 cents was a lot of money then to sacrifice for a button! Perhaps the wealthy did it for status.
