~~~~For the ANA in August. I like the idea of using light rail, but is it safe?
Carrying a box of 20?
I’d probably not.
Never been to Philly, but I'd invest in a cab instead based on my rail/subway rides in other large cities if you are carrying anything of value.
The short answer is no. Take a cab.
Not Philly but I watched a bunch of kids execute a bump and grab on the train in Paris. It’s pretty easy to watch one kid. A pack of 8 of them is harder.
I saw that happen in Paris on the Pont des Arts next to the Louve. There was an undercover cop that grabbed the kid and got the cell phone back to the woman. Pays to watch your stuff and hold on tight in any city.
Best, SH
Do you have a security detail? You could ask the Police and if you tell them your carrying valuable coins they (police) might chose to rob you. Crime is ramped and law enforcement is on the take in Philly. Take a cab. Don’t talk to the cabby either. Or just tell them where your going the address and Don’t tell the Cabby your going to a Coin Show or the cabby might roll you. Do you really have to go?
I lived in Pittsburg for 15 years. Yeah opposite side of state (nicer) but I have been cornered by stranger who insisted I give him my monthly bus pass. It was not fun. Criminals might know about the show stop so agree with others. Take a cab
Best place to buy !
I agree with @FadeToBlack as I take it all the time in Boston and have taken it in New York and Chicago and for the most part I think it is safe if you are using it during the daytime hours to attend the show. Now, if you are using it late at night and you are by yourself it can be dangerous in any large city.
Can you carry a concealed weapon in Pennsylvania?
If you're carrying valuable coins or a knot of cash, take a cab. If you travel light take the train.
Yes but not sure about the city limits.
Assuming you look like a normal schmoe with a carry on bag, it should be fine. Just do it during daylight hours. I trust you're not stupid enough to put on a T-shirt or baseball cap that says, "I love gold coins". Needless to say, don't talk to anybody about where you're going.
If you feel the need to ask then that answers your question. I'm glad I live in California......no matter what some people think. I know about Philly. Been there done that. No thanks.
I live here in Philly and take the regional rail all the time, but I've never been on the Airport line. It is a dedicated line back and forth to Center City. I agree with 1Mike1, if you're carrying real valuables, take a cab, but it won't be cheap. Otherwise, if you are carrying a briefcase or luggage or whatever, you will not stick out in the crowd - realize that >>everyone<< on that line is carrying luggage, since it's for air travelers.
Wear a Dave Schultz Flyers jersey and don’t shower for a week and you should be fine
Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
If you look nervous, and don't know where you are going then you are more likely to be a victim...I'd suggest that you take a cab...
I'll be taking the train from just outside Philly, it's very safe.
If I were to go, I would take a cab... and I am licensed to carry in PA....and, of course, I would be carrying. Cabs are more secure and you are dealing with just the driver, make sure you understand where you are going and the logical route (easy to determine - and put GPS on your phone)....Route deviations should cause you to question the driver... poor answer and call the cops. Cover all the bases, all the time. Cheers, RickO
On business trips I always use the rail - much faster, less expensive, and much cleaner than the crappy cabs at the Philly airport. But yeah, if you have a suitcase full of Saints, a cab might be the better way, although they are sketchy too - I would take a shuttle or higher end car service or consider Uber.
California? Ever take the BART train going into Oakland? Never again.
Way to generalize.
Well I certainly would not wear any of my Patriots T-Shirts
I'd use Uber.
Excellent post!!!!!!!!!! The "Hammer"
You got me on that one IF you consider the Bay Area to be part of California. I have my doubts that that place is even a part of the same solar system that the rest of us inhabit.
That's not true. We Philadelphians would treat you politely and kindly, as long as you took that f*%@#$+g Cowboys T-shirt off!
Other than the Zombies I would be really careful.
Have a string hanging out of your nose, keep your head down and don't look anyone in the eye, mumble to yourself and you should be fine. Works every time for me.
All kidding aside, as mentioned above the airport train is a dedicated line. Just look like you know what you are doing and you should be fine.
it's crackers to slip a rozzer the dropsy in snide
Wow, I did not realize the rail or public transportation was looked at this badly in the major cities. I don't drive as I don't have a driver's license by choice and take the MBTA or the "T" as we call it here in the Boston area all the time. I agree at night some of the sketchy areas could be an issue, but during the day I think you will be okay. Just don't be wearing a sign that says rob me as I'm carrying a bunch of expensive coins with me.
Be safe.
I wish I knew which of these comments are based on experiences specifically with the SEPTA Airport Line.
As I said before, I have never ridden that specific line before, but most all of the other routes I have been riding on for years. There are no guarantees in life, but so far I have never encountered a problem on a SEPTA train, ever. I qualify this by saying that I rarely travel the routes at night, 'cause I'm an early sleeper. The only times I would not ride a SEPTA train would be during a major snowstorm or on St. Patty's Day when many travel into the city to get drunk.
Anyone have facts? Number of robberies and assaults on the various lines in Philadelphia? How about the same for taxis and car-hire services?
So if you're taking a cab or ride-share, will you have them drop you off at the convention center or to the Hilton Garden Inn across the street?
