Very possible in a few cases.
I would guess pdlp was on the autism spectrum. He had many hallmarks: occasional outbursts of anger, obsessiveness, not getting social cues.
I really don't think that one was a troll.
Who should we run out of here next?
Many on the spectrum are quite accomplished, and successful...Probably shouldn't diagnose someones perceived intellectual, or, developmental disability from a series of posts. All of us can be a mixed bag of culls and BU's in some way, shape, or, form. I know you didn't mean any ill by your post- just a kind reminder.
Why shocked? As a new member, I didn't know to treat others with kid gloves. The fool had no clue, posted a lot of BS, added comments that added nothing to treads, and had many members completely snowed - folks like that are the "weeds" on the forums.
OK, so seriously now, if it was one post or two fine, this gentleman had no even minimal forum etiquette to at least open his eyes, and see one person doesn't just post multiple new threads which is, and was annoying, and disruptive to almost all of us. That's besides being advised/guided multiple times by some, and said OP completely ignored each effort. (Besides stating WTF if I recall, and other 4 letter words that shrunk to 3 letters)
I'd like to think we are a more focused bunch, and for those that say he's a newb - you know darn well the many that have come aboard , new, with questions and how many go out of there way to guide and assist them.
We all know we are not overall a selfish bunch, and that was not the case here, so if he does come back, and you are reading this, first get help to understand WHAT went wrong, then you can understand why you were run off the grid.
Many on the spectrum are quite accomplished, and successful...Probably shouldn't diagnose someones perceived intellectual, or, developmental disability from a series of posts. I think you are applying your own bias here. What did I say to suggest he was anything other than socially awkward? I never questioned his ability, but I do think he may be on the spectrum. The issue was not my thinking he was on the spectrum, a suspicion I never mentioned prior when I answered more of his posts than probably anyone else. But I do feel like the people who were continuously rude to him, flagged every post of his for abuse, and ultimately ran him off the site, should at least consider that they may have simply persecuted someone who couldn't help his behavior.
Note: I teach at a college that I"m told is #1 in the country for per capita autism spectrum students. We very early on created support systems for those students and they have enrolled in large numbers over the years. I have multiple autism spectrum disorder students every year - one of whom just got the highest grade ever in my class.
There is no doubt in my mind that he has some type of issue... He has been emailing me, and yes, sending me pictures of DDOs....I have replied, and tried to help... in his last email he insulted me for 'not seeing the obvious'...and he did post a picture from doubleddie.com... which, on close examination, showed that he did NOT have the DDO in his picture. He is upset about being bammed...but did not indicate he was coming back as an alt.. Cheers, RickO

Doug from Coin Talk? The guy that argued that bag marks on Morgan Dollars were "shovel" or "scoop" marks?
I was not banned from coin Talk Forum. In the beginneing, I was given a "vacation" for two weeks for aggressively attacking a lying fool who claimed all kinds of things he could not prove. Example: He "knew" that the Mint had a machine that checked each SE for spotting before it was shipped.
No. It was not Doug. Believe it or not, Doug is a fairly knowledgeable numismatist from the "Old School." We have butted heads several times over his opinions. As a moderator, he has given me very valuable advice that has made me less sarcastic and derogatory to members who post misinformation. No one on these forums is a "know-it-all."
Some, as I, may come across as one but I don't claim to be, have expanded my knowledge here, have changed my strong beliefs several times, and always acknowledge when I have been ignorant and had my opinion changed.
If I were not for Doug. Mark Stephenson (who I learned is no longer at PCGS), and the latitude of the present CU moderators, I should have been banned and "long gone" a year ago.
There's nothing wrong with being opinionated as long as you're open minded to being incorrect. I appreciate that in you @insider2, for what it's worth.
As for the subject of this thread, I feel sorry for the kid and ashamed at how some people treated him, but given his behavior I suspect the forum is better off without him.

Not as much a bias @jmlanzaf; more of an awareness. You had indicated, even though it was a "guess," that pdlf was on the spectrum, and further stated what you refer to as Hallmarks of those with autism/ on the spectrum: occasional outbursts of anger, obsessions, and not getting social cues.
Since this is a public forum, and it's not just viewed by members here, but hundreds of other non-members who may not have knowledge about autism; I wanted to stress that many are accomplished, and successful. I do apologize if you felt insulted, and did not intend for this to be an attack on you personally. However; I felt it was necessary to put out some positive. Your follow up to this thought, more than accomplished what I had intended, so, thank you for posting your involvement, enthusiasm, and success. This is what the public at large needs to hear, and also be reinforced with more success stories because there is a lot of misunderstandings, fear, and also a reciprocal social awkwardness from people not on the spectrum.
I do however still stand by my statement; probably shouldn't diagnose someones perceived intellectual, or, developmental disability from a series of posts. You don't know. How many mental disorders, and physical health issues share those same characteristics as you describe? Dependencies? Quite a few.
I've worked with several individuals on the spectrum in all levels of direct care; from job-coaching, mentoring, community involvement, in home services, work shops, to name a few. I've lived and assisted with day/night care on many busy, and sleepless nights. I've also worked with numerous other individuals not on the spectrum with intellectual, developmental disabilities for the past 15 years. I have 1,000's of hours of experience, worked with top notch professionals in this field, have a whole lot of course work, seminars, and CEU's I have to take to remain certified. I've operated my own business providing services for the past 5 years.
I'm not intending to create ill will, and I respect, and appreciate your efforts in what you do professionally. Aside from my concerns I addressed with you. The patience that you displayed with pdlf, and attempt to draw awareness to the negativity directed at him by other posters is admirable.
