bestdaybestday Posts: 4,242 ✭✭✭✭

lot 597577 ....GC has a 1934d Peace PCGS 66+ CAC.. bid now is $23,500... only 1 PCGS in 67 .. last 66 sold for $5,800...... Strange bidders think they see more than did CAC or PCGS

Great looking coin, it's to bad about the slight lower rev tarnish/toning/marks.

    Is that a gold CAC?

PCGS "guide" is 3900 in 66, but jumps to 26,500 in 66+ (and 75,000 in 67!).

Bologna. People cannot consistently make such fine distinctions, particularly when the see 1 or 2 in this condition per year.

    Here's the coin: https://greatcollections.com/Coin/597577/1934-D-Peace-Silver-Dollar-PCGS-MS-66-CAC

Question: Can one safely presume there are human bidders on this auction?

I would guess in order to register at GC you would need to be human.

I would guess so too, but that's not quite what I was talking about.

Is there some sort automated bidding at GC, or is the current bid the result of two people actually bidding, or ???

Sorry for the tangent, but I couldn't help asking given "strange bidders" comments by the OP.

    Thanks...Mike

GC is probably the most transparent in providing number of bids, bidders and what level than any of the auction firms.
Especially compared to some firms that are listing their own coins in their auctions, listed them as sold and then only for them to reappear later in another auction.

Here is the current bidder history for the 34-D Peace dollar.

I wonder what the lone 67 looks like ...

  • shinywhiteshinywhite Posts: 346 ✭✭✭

Hey guys, what is the actual definitive purpose of a "CAC". I mean, the coin is already graded and that's it, right?

  • specialistspecialist Posts: 956 ✭✭✭✭✭

providing numbers of bidders is meaningless. What if John doe had 3 bidder numbers? What if 2 more were his buddies? is there a house number? please.....only if you show names (which is unpractical) is it really transparent and NO auction co will ever do that.

I stopped because I have a few dealers who like to bid on every lot and people kept thinking it was me. I only bid at the very end of a sale if something is too cheap I want to buy. If my sales were any one elses auctions, I'd be the biggest buyer!

My bet the 34D has real bidders as I know of several people who went crazy in my Crow River Peace Dollar sale

CAC is confirmation that the coin has been reviewed and is middle to high for the grade assigned on the slab.

That MS 67+ is well struck, I'll tell you that. I'm not a fan with the neck and chin abrasions however.

Thanks. I just did some research. I'll be doing further research instead of bothering you guys with these questions. It's just so famn deep in this numismatics world of coins.....overwhelming at times tbh

66+'s seem to trade in the 20K plus range. I'm guessing it having a sticker didn't hurt. I'm not sure anyone buying that was counting on an upgrade. I hope not. Looks fine where it is.

30 years of TPG grading doesn't make me G-d, but your little slice of Heaven has too much dependence on what you consider the simplistic truth and little to do with current grading realities. It is altogether fitting and appropriate that your superb scholarship be recognized, but the ivory-tower academic should be aware that his grading skill set is theoretical, not practical.

Get used to the idea that the best of us are multi-talented idiot-savants. I have expert authority in grading. That means I'm right more often than I'm wrong and/or right enough often enough to work in the grading environment,

No _ex cathedra _ from me. No "Divine judg(e)ment". The British spelling is wrong not preferred. By me and most who learned to spell in this country. And yet I spell "luster" as "lustre" but not "theater" as "theatre". Silly humans ;) Some nuance is useful. Look in your mirror and check out how much you need to be a god of some sort. and how much it hurts to find out you're not. Then check out your feet of clay like the rest of us. Grading is an art, not a science, though industrial-quality lasers and AI seem a very strong possibility for grading the 69/70 line for moderns,
