Great medal!

This was on ebay and ended yesterday. What a neat item! I think they were made in the 1860s and 1870s. It sold for $47.

    I have one of those - with the attached ribbon and pin....Have had it for a very long time - do not even recall where I acquired it....I should investigate the background and value. I assume it is worth more with the ribbon.... Cheers, RickO

    Fascinating. I guess it is a service ribbon for Army personnel who served in the Indian Wars. (maybe a veterans medal vs. issued at the time of the wars?)

    What strikes me is that the portrait is so bold and majestic. It makes me suspect that even as they were commemorating those who fought the Indians, they were also showing a degree of respect for the Indians. I can't imagine a WWII service medal showing a portrait of Nazi on the front, for example.
