I will be attending the ANA show in August (show is Aug.14th-18th) for the first time. The show goes from Tuesday to Saturday. Are there better days to go, or any benefits for going earlier or later in the week?

I believe that you will be very happy that you have chosen to attend this show.
Not only will you see some amazing coins, but ANA show is typically a good opportunity for books and supplies too. Don't miss the membership exhibits, they can be surprisingly worthwhile.
The most recent ANA that I have attended were in Rosemont (Chicago) and I attended for two consecutive days. If I could only go for one single day, I might choose Thursday morning and would also assume that I could do the afternoon too. But be there in the morning, most shows get their floor "buzz" not too long after opening the doors.
As a single day, Saturday is most likely to disappoint because of dealer departures. However, some people can make Saturday "work for them", it depends on what you are looking for/ trying to do.
I would attend on the day Heritage holds their platinum auction in the evening .
You will enjoy waching that.

Here is the August schedule. Many excellent presentations by noted numismatists. If you want to see the most coins or buy/sell come early.
Also, I am speaking on Thursday afternoon at the NBS meeting. All are welcome.

I get to go for the first time. Unfortunately I had to pick my time frame and I opted to show up early so I could take the Ancients course, but I have to leave Thursday. Ancients are calling my name but I'm a total newbie and figured to take advantage of the educational opportunity.

The ANA convention is fantastic! Try to go for at least the first two or three days if your schedule permits. You will be overwhelmed when you first walk onto the bourse floor. It’s basically a sea of coins! Stay focused and enjoy the experience!
Tuesday is 1pm - 6pm and will be heavy with dealer to dealer. If I could go, I'd probably fly in Tuesday night and attend Wed, Thu, Fri.
Take your time, expect you can't see everything and have a blast!

Don’t forget the club meetings. Lots of chance to learn and make new friends.
A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.
A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.
I won't make this show, but Philly is a great place for this, I went to the PCGS member show there last October and we had a blast. That show was considered very successful.

The ANA show usually gets good reviews, though some have said it needs certain improvements. I would certainly attend if I were located nearby...Cheers, RickO
I will try to attend. The mid-week format is a little challenging but will try to make it work.
Looking forward to the show. I hope that dealers who may have had reservations about coming back to Philadelphia will notice an improvement since the 2012 show in how the convention center is run. Unlike 2012, we now have a professional management company running the building. Prior to that it was "run" by labor unions. Nothing against unions as my son-in-law is an ironworker in the city. But when you have to pay someone to set up your booth, change a light bulb or plug in an extension cord, it leaves a negative impression. It was the number one reason that groups said would keep them from returning. All unions have agreed to new contracts for working at the convention center and it should be a better experience for the dealers and public.
Parking in any big city is a challenge, consider public transportation. A regional rail train can take you from the airport to 30th Street station where you switch to the Market East line which stops under the convention center. The center is very close to the historical sites so save a little time for them as well. While the U.S Mint is only a short walk away, your time would be better spent at the newly opened Museum of the American Revolution at 2nd and Chestnut. Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell are on Chestnut between 5th and 6th. The Reading Market across the street from the convention center is a good place to find any kind of food choice. It's not fine dining but not fine dining prices either.

Lucky for me Amtrak now has a stop <10 miles from my house.
The older I get the more attractive Amtrak is--no driving and no (shudder) flying those distances anymore. My last couple plane trips had borderline terrifying moments and the local airport is NOT conducive to restful flight. Not Happening.
I'm taking a non-numismatic trip from about 10 miles from where I live now to 10 miles from where I grew up--cross country but with the sleeper-ette option it can't be much different than living on a ship for 6 months in the Navy right? But, you know, with scenery. And, it can't be as loud as a catapult shot 2 decks up.
But, with Amtrak, NY and Philadelphia are quite do-able--and Chicago is just an overnight trip. Not bad at all. Shoot, on my non-numismatic trip I have a 5 hour stop in Chicago, I have a coin store I might get to check out
Seriously @ricko maybe you have options if you want to make a non-efficient trip out of it.

Well, if I see a gaggle of 'youngsters' on Tuesday I'll say hello. I'm still working on my schedule (and part of it is seeing the Liberty Bell while I'm in Philadelphia), so perhaps I'll run into you guys after all.
Shoot, I would have liked that, but if it's Thursday that's when I'm catching my train.
