2002 Ohio State Quarter Philly MM Appears to be silver. What's up with that?

I found this today. It looks like a silver quarter but it has the (P) mint mark. I"m puzzled. Is it possible a silver planchet was used by mistake?

Yes, there were all those sets of plated quarters. I've seen thousands. I've also seen more than my share of clad quarters where the copper layer wasn't visible.

HSN hyped plated Statehood Quarters in a red oak box. Someone needed a Cole so it entered circulation.

Definitely weigh the coin... also, a razor scratch in the reeding on the coin should expose copper. Cheers, RickO

BTW....99.999 of these types of things are not errors, but there is always the chance that you could find something worthwhile, so always pay attention to your coins!

I found a super-rare error in a roll of new nickels a couple years ago, and a partially broadstruck quarter a few months go in the reject tray of a coin machine.

Someone has to find these things, so if you are on the lookout you increase the chances that it could be you.

  • Thanks everybody for the information. Very much appreciated.
