I hate to see that. It’s going to be 109 today in Studio City so we are on red alert. We saw a mad fire in Utah while driving back from Jackson Hole last week

Just check the heat. We are at 109 degrees right now, firefighters earn their pay on days like these.

    Justacommeman,

You drove right by a turn-off to my mountain cabin. Had I known this, I would have asked you to hose it down, prune away excess foliage, maybe excavate a fire break. Hell, if it burns, I'll just call our insurance guy. :|

For those that don't know, the bushes in your pic appear to be California Shrub (Scrub) Oak brush. One acre of shrub oak on fire is equal to the energy produced by the atom bomb dropped on Japan. Fortunately it does no harm to the brush as it spreads via root sprouts (underground). Fire will destroy what you see but it will recover within a few years (rather slowly) from the underground roots that are not harmed by the blaze.

I don't know if this is true or not, but learned this years ago from the Fire Captain of Los Angeles in a speech he gave.

The fuel being burned is extremely intense and hard to extinguish. It grows/spread rapidly and is extremely dangerous to both humans and wildlife as it will sometimes spreads at a rate measured in MPH.

It's advised to remove all such brush to at least 20' from any structure.

We had a similar kind of oak brush in Colorado where I lived for many years.

    Be safe.

My handy-dandy, non-coin hobby, weather station says it's 112 in Fullerton right now....

I'm not leaving the house. Good time to attribute coins, or something equally physical. :)

OK, I'll stop complaining about the stifling humid summers of the mid-Atlantic. We have a few brush fires, but usually quickly handled by the local crews.

Sorry Mark......you can have California. It was 88 here in Illinois and we were complaining about the heat.

Which Ca. will you be in when you split into 3 states?

  • WildIdeaWildIdea Posts: 1,877 ✭✭✭✭✭

I just landed home in S. Dakota from a 5 day adventure in San Jose and SF. Fires around the bay too, but no serious heat, just winds. Actually needed to buy a coat and scarf for me and hat and scarf for my wife to watch fireworks from the wharf. Despite the noted drawbacks, man, what a spectacular place full of rich American history. Loved it.

We can suffer fires here too, and as more and more people settle and build within the forested areas, the loss if property goes up. Although beautiful, there is an ever present risk of fire. They say you can trim around your house and do what you can but the embers fly like a snow storm but of sparks and those can fly really far.

Our hearts go out to anyone that has to live through a tragedy like that. Hang in there CA, the fire season is just starting! I can’t even begin to relate to 110-117 temps. WOW!

9:09pm and just 105 degrees here. Nice summer day for the Vegas valley. Only going to be 102 for a high tomorrow and that will be at 12:00.01 tonight!

Big cooling trend down to 100 and some rain in the forecast for middle of next week......monsoons are a com'ing.

Well they will be the three greatest states so it won't matter much. They will all probably come with mountains and oceans.

Actually 88 in Illinois is probably feels hotter then 114 here. It's very very dry here and hence the scare of fire. I worked outside all day caring for the plants with dips in the pool in between.

California is a very large state...northern California is very different from Southern California or the desert regions.
It was a very pleasant 83F here in the northern SF Bay area.

Amazing what difference a week makes. These photos from last week were taken in Anaheim with the temperatures mostly in the high 70s and low 80s

Yep! This one came on fast. In fact, last night it got down to 68deg overnight....then 112deg at my location by mid-afternoon. Crazy.

The humidity has been terrible here lately. The heat index (feels like) has been as high as 110. On days like that you can slap a quart jar of water out of the air with a 2X4!

    Have a great weekend! :)

In the mid nineties the last few days, but cooling down now... sixties this morning. Very dry though....Cheers, RickO

The thing about our heat is that it is a dry heat, low humidity. I could never live in a high heat high humidity place unless it was on the ocean.

I was actually complaining LAST week on how cold it was.

Five years ago, just two months after I moved to the north end of Colorado Springs, we had a plume like that three miles east of the new house from the Black Forest Fire. Fortunately for us the wind was blowing the other way, but it took out 500 homes and killed two people who stayed too long trying to get stuff out of their house.

I was in our attic doing electrical work for my wife's remodel. HOT! It was 117 a few miles inland from the coast where we are. Got to 98 at our place. Good luck to all dealing with the fires.

Mid nineties here, but it did snow earlier this week. I would take -20 over +110 any day.

Downright cold here in Vegas today and the next couple by comparison.

Not a big fan of CA in general, but Cal Fire did a damn good job on the Buckingham Fire a couplea days ago. Saw one of our properties on the news. Glad that it's still there.

As far as -20 vs. 110... As my daddy used to say, "ya don't gotta shovel heat".
