Did any of you start your well established permanent collections by a lack of focus....to begin with? 
An old time prominent expert once told me I am bordering TOUGH LOVE on following any suggestion for a direction 
...and here I am with these mix match of the product of no name collection after almost a year worth of collecting

I would call that an Eclectic Collection that most would find extremely enviable! Exceptionally drool-worthy!

You collect what you like! And I like them too! haha. I don't have a super focused collection either. I buy what I like (which is mostly gold!)

One way to focus without really focusing is to do a type set. (That's my approach
)You can narrow the field by restricting it to a date range (20th century for example) or a denomination ( Nickels) if desired.

Extreme focus is nice sometimes, but the age-old advice is to collect what you like. And what you like does not look too bad!
Most of my collection is also "eclectic".
If it is fulfilling, do more of it. If not, do less of it. The good part about coins is that if you ever need to "clean house" to get rid of the "clutter", you will often times get some money for your trouble.

We all start out buying everything. Then buy even more. After some time, one tends to focus. Then focus more clearly.
You have a very good if not great start depending on the price points of course.
Work on focus, price points and eye-appeal which I think you may be already ahead of the game at your point in collecting

There's no wrong answer. Collect what you like. With this approach when you come across something you gotta have, its easier to part with something from your stash when funds are tight. You are not breaking up a set.
Why have a Box of 20, when you can have a Pile of 100?

Looks like a theme to me - the classic designs in gold and silver.
It's one of the good things about this hobby - everyone is free to collect what they like.
Tough Love is not needed unless you start buying stuff you don't really like, start overspending your budget, etc.
You are at the point of choosing between being a collector or a hoarder/investor.
I recommend the former. Study one or a few series and look at lots of coins in person. Go to shows, view auctions, meet dealers, etc.

If you collected all that Gold & Silver in 1 year I would say you are doing just fine.
My only suggestion is to stay away from the MS70 Slabbed Silver Eagles and Modern Silver Bullion and Medals as you will LOSE when they spot,,,,,,, not IF they spot,,,,,,,,, it is WHEN they spot.
Even if a few don't spot you will LOSE enough on the ones that DO spot to still be underwater,,,, even though it is nice warm Hawaiin Water.
Sell the slabbed BULLION NOW before they spot and buy common silver eagles or silver bullion.
The same goes for all that High Priced silver you are holding,,,,,,, I would be weary that it will spot also.
Buy common low premium silver and nobody cares if it spots or not.

@Paradisefound Wow, you have the start of a great collection. The only thing I would change is what someone else already mentioned and that is to stay away from the high grade (MS70 or PF70) bullion as it can spot and look ugly after a while. As far as the gold goes if you want to add some focus I would do 2-4 different type pieces or varieties for each gold denomination. You already have a good start. For example you have the $10 gold with a motto and without a motto. You can do the same thing with the $20 Saint with and without motto and you also have a $20 Saint with an overdate, which I would consider another variety. You can do the same thing with smaller gold denominations also working your way down to the $1 or fractional gold.
What is important is to like or love what you collect. Getting and staying focus will come with time.

Actually, an overdate coin is considered to be a variety rather than a type coin. Agree that the 1909/8 Saint is a very cool coin with the overdate visible with the naked eye.
