A friend brought some cool stuff by today

I have a buddy that has pretty decent collection of coins stuck away. He brought a couple of things in today. He has a 1878-CC $20 gold, he had no idea how valuable it has become. It had a sticker on the holder that showed he paid $1100 for it years ago. He also has 2 sets of Mercury dimes, one a complete set with all the varieties, and one missing only the 42/41. I suggested he send the 1878-CC gold to be slabbed. He asked what he should do with the Mercury sets. Is it too price prohibitive to get them all graded, or should he leave them as is? The pics of the dimes were taken through the plastic so they have some strange refections. Also, any opinions on the grade of the $20 would be appreciated.

Really depends on his intentions. If they were my coins, I'd like to have the gold certified, along with (maybe) the key Merc dates... I say maybe because I just lobe the look of that full Capital set! Thanks for sharing.

On the other question - I grade it several thousand dollars. I'm not sure if PCGS will net grade it for the scratch, or put it in a genuine holder. That's all I'm going to say on that matter - hopefully some of the gold specialist will chime in later.

This. If he is getting ready to sell, then you probably want to slab the keys and semikeys and the $20. Depending on your experience, you may want to assist with sorting the dimes. Overall it looks like a nice set, but if any of the better dates have been cleaned, then it may not be worth sending those in. Absolutely the 16D needs authenticated and slabbed, along with the overdate and the 21s.

I would get all of them slabbed.

    Especially that '16 D.
The marks under the MM bother me.

    Good luck

I would guess that double eagle grade would fall somewhere in the VF-30-35 range. 6-7K would be the value. Great looking sets of Merc’s too.

He mentioned he might sell them, but he seldom gets rid of anything. He doesn't need the cash, but these have been sitting in a safe deposit box for years, along with a ton of other coins. He is going to bring a box full of stuff in Monday to show me.

That full Merc set looks awfully good. I would be torn on the keys. The gold I would submit. Your friend has some nice coins.

I would grade the gold at VF30.... The dime set is really nice, and if he is selling there are two ways to go... intact for one lump sum... break out the keys to slab, get good prices.. and sell the remaining dime set for a reduced price. Definitely slab the gold... Cheers, RickO

The twenty needs to be graded to get all the juice out. On the Merc's....I would pick and choose. Most of them look nice.

Each coin needs to be evaluated in regards to its worth slabbed vs. raw. If slabbing makes economic sense AND HE INTENDS TO SELL SOON then slab. If he has no interest in selling then delay slabbing until he changes his mind and does decide to sell.

The "D" on the 16-D doesn't look right, but it could be the pic.

I agree--it might be from reverse die 3, but it does look "off" from the pictures......again, may just be the image.

Check the 1919 Merc. for obverse doubling.

The CC $20 looks improperly cleaned to me.

    Nice dime set!
