9 to 1 ratio
It used to be that ebay was an auction venue. However that has slowly gone away and today in my field (CC coins) there are 9 BIN's for ever 1 auction. Now it is just a place for dealers that can't sell anywhere else to throw it up on ebay and ask exorbitant prices.
Rant over.

There sure aren't as many true auctions anymore.

A three coin set of CC GSA dollars, 1882, 1883 and 1884 (most common) for stupid money. Graded or ungraded:

I don’t really disagree with you. But it’s to be expected with the large seller fees.
That's exactly why I love listing items at $.99 no reserve auctions. People love these. I have put items up for sale with a buy it now price and they don't sell. Then I list it as a $.99 auctions and it ends up selling for more
It seems inevitable that new businesses occasionally create something unique and truly special and then gradually work hard to wander away from what it was that made them unique and special.
2 62 and a 63! I agree!

In many cases you can figure out who the dealer is from the eBay listing and contact him outside eBay for a private sale at a more realistic price since in many cases the coins they are selling on eBay are also available for sale in their retail coin shop. While true auctions for nice slabbed coins are rare on eBay many of the BIN coins also include the "or best offer" option so you can sometimes negotiate a more realistic price. Of course when their BIN price is outrageously high I don't even waste my time making an offer.

Maybe that's why we should have contact with actual people who enjoy this hobby. The internet does not ensure a best price. Relationships are worth the effort. Peace Roy

Still making 100K + profit a year off ebay.
Easy Peasy if you take the time to be educated.
Simple search engine tweaks take, for example, a category I deal in, from 418,295 items this AM down to 27,924, of which 721 are new in the last 24 hours. Since I check about 3x per day, that is about 250 per check or 1 1/2 pages set at 192 per page, and I can skim that in 5 minutes per check.
Serious question ... why is $250 each for the GSA Hoard considered stupid money? A quick check of online retail sales list many graded (mostly NGC) and ungraded with OGP in the $200-$240 range. What do you find is the current market for common GSA CC dollars?

The great ebay debate...
Second only to the great CAC debate....Always interesting, never resolved. Cheers, RickO
Almost a 1000 that a really auctions, but over 9000 that are BIN (7,139 that are Morgans).
That example had two graded 62 and one 63. These are routinely available for $200 or less. Overpriced by $150 or so. Maybe stupid is the wrong word as $150 doesn't mean much to some folks.

just trying to reinforce with actual numbers.
sometimes folks are limited on what they can list at. I agree that you should use the ones with a make offer and give it a try.
Best place to buy !

I see what you mean ... they are 'overpriced' by about $50 each (or $150 for the lot of 3). Thanks.

these means one of two things: when you use the BIN you aren't listing at exorbitant prices --- or --- since bidders pay exorbitant prices according to your example then the practice is a smart one. I tend to agree with the OP's premise but without a multitude of examples it is hard to defend.
I like true auctions but also use BIN when the price is right.
Preferred modest listing fees (and lower final value) Pay to play eliminated a lot of the fluff coins.
Many times I've wished eBay listings had an LOL button - as in "ha ha ha, there is zero chance you will ever sell that coin for that money even if you leave it listed for a 100 years".
Smitten with DBLCs.
I look at it another way.
If the seller would like to have a set dollar amount, sell with bIn.
As an auction you may or may not get what your asking.
With a Bin listing a buyer can make an offer and the lookers won't waste your time with 10,000 questions.
ebay is not an auction venue. As I learned on one 'auction', there are no rules against withdrawing/rescinding your bids at any time on any auction. Topping that, you can later re-enter and bid on the same auction if the desire strikes again.
I was literally just thinking about this last week!
Lots of eyes on morgan dollars, especially CC minted ones. You are a fish in a pond packed like sardines.
At least my pond has catchable fish.
