Guess the grade....1900 Double Eagle (grade posted-see first post)

What do you think and why??

NGC graded it as a MS64 and CAC agreed. I thought it had a bit too much chatter on the cheek and wanted other opinions. It appears that lots of the forum agreed, but perhaps this is one that needs to be seen in hand. I liked it due to the strike and will hopefully evaluate it in hand soon. Thanks for the opinions!

64 possible 65 obverse but the reverse looks 63. Guess 64.

I'll go with 61. Seems to have quite a bit of chatter

    1. Good luster, but lots of bag marks. Maybe higher as you are showing it.

    62/63 from the images.
Might go higher if the scuffs are lighter than the picture makes them appear.

Agree. The cheek is a prime focal area and there are a lot of contact marks there.

It looks like a 63 to me but I could see a 62 if the graders were grouchy. 64 would be a gift on that one.

The strike is very good, the luster is strong and reverse easily makes 64 tho.........

Yikes - good thing I don't collect gold!

I do have an OGH St Gaudens in 64 that has FAR fewer marks and grazes than this coin, so based on my very limited experience, with coins of substantially different designs, I put this at 62. Maybe they are more forgiving with a portrait style coin like this one.

MS62.... way too much chatter....both sides....Perhaps in hand, without magnification, it looks better. Cheers, RickO

They would probably go 65. Been my experience anyways that PCGS is much more liberal on pre 33 gold grades compared to NGC.

Congrats and from what I have seen NGC much tighter on gold then PCGS so that is solid. Plus the sticker seals it.

Darkening on the high points; I have seen it on a lot of $20 gold pieces, coins were in Europe in bank bags usually.

Thanks. I've seen dirty looking Saints referred to as having Euro dirt. I'm curious why European sourced coins are like this.
