Roll searchers, identify yourselves!
Just wondering how many of you actively look through rolls for varieties, silver, missing dates for the Whitman folder, etc. I try and pick up a box of Lincoln Cents a week from the bank, and do between 5-10 rolls a day. I find it to be relaxing, and good family fun with my daughters. You never know what will turn up.
Here's one of my best finds from a couple of years ago, a 1983 DDR graded MS64RD by our hosts:

    It's been a couple of years since I have searched anything but I used to search half dollar rolls.
    My best finds were lots of melt and close to a dozen clad proofs.

    The last couple of weeks I have thought about searching again. Hmmmmm

    I search when I can, tomorrow picking up from my credit union. Some of my best finds, two 1858 FE cents, rolls of silver halves, a 1922 Peace dollar with a bunch of Ikes. In the past few years I have found more than 30 IHC's, earliest an 1871, thousands of Wheats, hundreds of silver war nickels, hundreds of silver dimes, hundreds of 40% halves.

    In fact roll searching is a lot more fun for me these days than buying up 5-6 figure coins - maybe it is the thrill of the hunt or something.

    I'm a roll searcher too, though I haven't been doing so for the past couple of months.
    In addition to the occasional silver coin, it would likely be a modern DDO memorial that might take the top spot. I think it was an 84 DDO though I'd have to go dig it out to be sure.

    I find roll searching to be more relaxing than many other endeavors.

    Just finishing up the last of my state quarter lot. About $5k worth. Didn't find any of the big varieties that will make it to the cherry pickers guide, but a few minor varieties. Won't know the results of the high grade search until I build up enough funds for a submission.

    I search sometimes n mainly for silver but I found a thick planket IHC on one penny roll and a counterfeit 1914d penny (shaved from a 44d) man I do love the treasure hunts

    Well, since I last posted in this thread - three years ago - I did find a '41 WLH in a roll of halves... and that is my only find of significance in all the rolls of halves that I have searched. Cheers, RickO

    one of our members, I think it was seanq, was looking through a roll of unc. 1949-D Jefferson Nickels and found something like 20-D/S.

    I found this one searching cent rolls I bought.

    Best would be around 500 Washington MEL from 3-4 $1,000 boxes

    One bank stop netted around 400 40% halves.

    Gave it up a couple weeks ago..after years of going through a lot of rolls. I never found anything major.. I did find a lot of minor Lincoln cent errors.

    How far back can we go?

    In 1999 I found a 40% off center P mint Connecticut quarter in a bag my favorite bank teller ordered for me.

    When I was a kid in the 1950s every roll of cents I searched was full of wheat cents with an occasional IHC. Actually think I found every Lincoln except a 1914-D 1922 Plain and 1955 DDO in circulation. Dime rolls, when I could afford to buy them, were all 90% silver, found many 1921 and 1921-D but never the elusive 1916-D. If I only knew then what I know now and had the funds to do something about it!

    It's a lot of work to search rolls. Sometimes tedious, dirty work. But, there is nothing quite like pulling something special at face value! It really is the purest form of collecting, and I'll always look at that 1983 DDR and remember that "rush" I got when I found it.

    I am a regular roll searcher, once in a while you can get lucky. Probably my best find was a large lot of silver from a bank visit. Asked for half dollars and took all they had, glad I did.

    My best find was likely a Civil War token in a p.....oops, in a cent roll.
    Not a real common one either.

    I've searched all the denominations since 1957 but concentrated on nickels until 1976 and quarters since. My treasures are too numerous to mention but the most valuable to other collectors was a VF+ 1950-D nickel I found in 1964 and sold for the equivalent of ~$200 in today's money.

    I've found way scarcer coins than this though and, I guess, even those nice choice '83-P quarters are higher priced than the '50-D.

    All the scarcities in circulation haven't been varieties and errors.

    Still occasionally do it but haven't ordered boxes from the banks in quite a while. I still ask my regular banks if they have any oddities. Last week I got a roll of 40% halves from a teller. So still participating just not a regular weekly thing.
    Also - nothing I've found has ever topped the photo I posted here back in 2018. That was an epic find in total but no key dates, just stacks of Walkers and Bens.

    I use to do it professionally so I have so many top pops but here is a standout. I actually found 7 of these is a roll from Ebay of MS 1943 Jeffs.
    MS66 Double Eye Jeff.

    Back in the early 70's my roll hunting paid off with a VF 1969-S doubled die. John Devine authenticated it but it was still a coin being given scrutiny by the Secret Service due to a (now unfounded) counterfeiting scheme. Being a 15 year old kid and wanting to avoid any possible legal issues I quickly sold it (to Natalie Halperin) for $350. Moon money for me back then.

    I've kept Gems of current dates since 1972. A few of these are scarce or valuable. I was able to secure very few of these in quantity because releases of Gems were very small and usually highly localized. By the time I got there the coins had been dispersed.
