It's a misaligned die, not sure if there is a specific name for the rim.

Would it be safe to say its a error ?

Yes, of course it's an error as cents are not intended to be minted in that fashion.

That's a tough call. I'll let others weigh in on that one as well....

I am not sure that it is an error as much as sloppy set-up of the press, but you can definitely make the argument that it is an error, although it is minor and common. Speaking for myself, I usually do save the random misaligned die that I run into if it is really noticeable.

This is very true, but the argument (assuming anyone wants to argue about it, which I don't think is the case) has to do with tolerances. Just as there are tolerances for planchet weight, etc., I assume there are tolerances for die alignment as well. The example posted is clearly out of the range that we normally expect to see.

Same for rotated dies - how extreme does it have to be before it is an "error"? (That is just a rhetorical question to make a point about what is accepted as sloppy workmanship vs what is a recognized and sought after error).

Die alignment is precise in as far as the hammer die striking the bottom die.

Needs a verbal description: "Obverse slightly off-center due to misaligned die. Wide rim at upper left."

I have a whole collection of these things. You can do rim breaks by area or denomination, etc. They're cheap enough and everywhere and should be relatively easy to fill a small box with them.

You could also collect them and donate them to someone who works with Young Numismatists at shows.

    I concur that it's a misaligned die.
They're cool, and I still stash them even though they have very little if no premium.
    Yours is a nice example.
Thanks for sharing it, @Jimnight .

I think it is a good idea to save all errors minor/major. It sparks interest in coins and promotes interest in the minting process. For example: "How did that odd coin get that way?"

Successful transactions:Tookybandit. "Everyone is equal, some are more equal than others".

It is indeed a minor error coin... I always save such items in my 'education' coin box...... Cheers, RickO
