Good find. Europe seems to be the hotspot lately.

Europe's centuries of wars have resulted in many of these type of finds.

Wow, wonder why so many 600 finds.

Between wars, dictators, and the Holocaust, there must be an enormous amount of valuables buried around Europe. They will be finding stuff for 1000s of years.

In the case of this story, once again we learn why it is best to keep your trap shut if you find a hidden treasure. These coins are not archeologically significant and seem to have no clear owner. But, the funders will very possibly see none of it.

Many people didn't trust banks or paper money back then. Many feel the same way today. ;):D

It's stories like this that drive me!

The Fox News article states that the coins were all dated 1870.

The year may be significant as in 1870 Germany (Prussia) invaded France.

On a personal note, I cannot see how the workers could have stolen and sold the coins without getting caught by either the police or tax collectors.

It seems to me to be a cautionary tale about what happens when there is no more 'cash money'. Accepting checks for gold is stupid, the check has to go into your bank account and then the records can always be looked over and tied back to you.

Yes, the year is significant, I think. I have some counterstamped French coins and parody medals lampooning the govt for their humiliating defeat at Sedan in1870.

As for the workers, I suppose it depends on how many there were.... ;)

Back in the 1960s, a family friend's father was digging in his basement with a hired crew and they unearthed a load of 1930s era Federal Reserve Bank notes. he handed some 100s out to the crew and sent them home while he assessed the rest. (It was his house, but he bought the silence of the others by sharing the wealth). He and is wife bought a new Mustang with those old $100 bills.

After JBK's edit, my original comment here, in this spot, became nonsensical.

It may not have been too sensical in the first place.
