No, in the US it is commonly called a penny.
It may not be "correct", but it IS a common name for it.

"Nickels" is slang, and you could argue "quarter" is as well, since the coin is a quarter dollar.
In the same way every facial tissue is called a Kleenex.

In 1990, United States Representative Jim Kolbe (R-AZ) introduced the Price Rounding Act of 1989, H.R. 3761 to eliminate the penny in cash transactions, rounding to the nearest nickel.
A Penny (British) is two cents (value-whise). So a Half Penny would equal a Cent, and a Farthing was equal to a Half Cent.
1990 was also the last year that New Zealand - and Australia - minted one-cent coins. (We don't even have five-cent coins these days.)

We would pitch a penny 5 feet onto a 3ft x 3ft table top filled with 1 inch squares... each square was worth 1c to 50c... in order to win... the penny had to be in the square...so if your penny was in the 50c square that's what you won. Big money making game.
Yeah..... "Cent Lady" just doesn't have the same charm as "Penny Lady"......

"A Cent for your thoughts" just doesn't sound right. Neither does "A Cent pincher".
Nevertheless "Penny" is so ingrained in our society that the Cent becomes one 9 out of 10 times.

And I do believe her cat "Penny" would'nt take too kindly to being called "Cent" either. "Cent" does not have a nice ring to it like "Penny".
Accurate terminology is for the purists.... and technical discussions...The term penny is a firmly ensconced term in the general lexicon, and no matter how the purists may try, it will not be dislodged. It is best that we all accept it, even as we did before we were collectors - Did we not, as children, call them pennies??? And did we not (the older members here), buy 'penny candy'?? So, my suggestion is, if in a technical discussion, cent is appropriate. However, penny is an accurate term, and should not be disparaged when used. Cheers, RickO

Here's my two bits. Penny is a description not unlike nickel or quarter. Cent is a denomination like 5 cents or twenty-five cents.

I will bet that these originated in the colonial era if not before. Didn't Ben Franklin say "A penny saved is a penny earned". He grew up spending British coins.
But, to your point, I don't think I can recall a single phrase or saying that includes "cent", except maybe "red cent".

As for "Large cent, Chain cent, Wreath cent, Fugio cent", those are just the formal names of the coins, like "Lincoln Cent, "Indian Head Cent", etc.
We are focusing on common usage. I used to be a stickler for "cent" but just when I was convinced that "penny" was acceptable slang or common usage, people are trying to push back. Make up your minds!!

Another pet peeve is 1909-s Lincoln VDB. They never minted an Indian Head penny with VDB so why do we suddenly need to say "Lincoln"?
Because you have 1909 and 1909 VDB, and 1909S and 1909S VDB.
