Just wanted to share this with everyone. I purchased this out of a fresh roll back in 2011 from a major dealer.

    Most strike-throughs on modern US bullion are small. This is abnormally large for the coinage type. Very, very nice.

    I believe it weighed an ounce if my memory serves me right, if that’s possible. The weight, not my memory...lol. I tried to open the air-tite with no luck except for damaged fingernails. So I didn’t want to force it and have the coin roll down the street on me.
    I wish I knew how or what caused this deep of a depression. Maybe someone here is familiar with this type of error.

    Missing that much gold must affect it's bullion value.

    I've never seen a coin, gold or silver that was struck though something that looked like it pushed that much material.

    It probably did weigh an ounce because it was supposed to weigh 1.1 ounces total weight.

    That is an amazing error on a gold coin.... Too bad you cannot remove it from the airtite... would really like to know the actual depth..... I have no idea what may have caused such a large indentation... Perhaps @FredWeinberg can give us some input on this coin. Is there any indication of the indentation on the obverse?? Cheers, RickO

    Should weigh the same if the planchet was normal to start with. The displaced gold would just move around some.

    Very cool find, unusually large, and one I’d probably have slabbed before selling.

    Agree.

    If it were seriously underweight then it might not have made it out of the mint. I assume they weigh things various ways at various steps in the process to account for all the gold.

    I assume this is quite valuable as an error. Did the dealer see the flaw and still sell it to you as bullion?

    Kind of interesteg how I came about purchasing this bullion coin. A gentleman was purchasing some one ounce AGE’s and the dealer opened the roll and the gentleman said “ This one is damaged I don’t want it.” My ears immediately came focused on that conversation about the damage. Sorry, I did eavesdrop. He said he didn’t want it.
    After their deal was completed I asked if I could see the coin. After seeing it I asked if I could purchase it as a memory of our 30th Annivesary which was that day.
    The dealer was happy to sell it to me. I paid $300 over spot that day. It was my first error coin I believe.
    It’s neat to have this unique error.
