I thought this might be interesting to know as I'm looking at a love token.
Serious question. When looking at a monogram (some form of interlaced letters) is there a UNIVERSAL RULE, way or order to display them (right to left, big and small, one over the other) so that anyone can determine the correct order of the initials? If not, I guess it is just an artsy thing.
Thanks.
While waiting for responses, I'm going to do the "big boy thing" and try to answer my own question.

If a big initial in the middle, that is the last name, the other two are first and middle, left to right.
If all equal size, might (not sure) be just in order left to right. But I don't think this is as common.
If two initials then left to right, first and last names.
I like love tokens, but don't know if there is a right way to display them. I would display gold on top, smaller to larger alphabetically. But it is your collection so do as you please.
Go to the Engravers Cafe and you can see all the styles and decide what you like best.

Although I cannot cite a reference (at this time), I always thought the center letter was the first of the last name, and then, left to right, first initial, middle initial. I guess I better look it up... be back later if I can confirm that sequence. Cheers, RickO
Looks like the general rule is as I thought... Cheers, RickO

Thanks Ricko. It get's complicated but the one thing the sites don't dhow is when the letters are on top of each other and intertwined as a typical coin engraving. Size still matters and I guess it is possible to tell which letters are on the top.
Excellent reference! Thanks!
If an engraver from Seattle were to make a love token out of a Washington-Carver half dollar, would he be a
Washington Washington-Carver carver?
How long have you been holding that one back
Here are a couple love token gold dollars on a bracelet I have. How would they be deciphered?
The top is just a "W."
I see an "I" a "B" and an "A" in the other. They are intertwined and the same size with no offset. That's the kind of monogram that has me stumped. I was unable to find info on this type on the net. Only the owner knows and they are dead.
If I were to produce a Love Token, I would probably engrave the first name letter before I engraved the last name letter. It stands to reason. Hence, if there was a "telltale" in the engraving that shows that process, it would give you your answer.
WHEW! I thought way to much about my answer
