Used it to buy an overpriced box of 2005-06 UD Ultimate Collection hockey for my unopened collection. At $100 off the BIN price it was reasonable - though still probably overpriced compared to what a box would sell at auction. The only 05-06 box I am still looking for is UD The Cup I opened half a dozen of those boxes over the years and didn't pull anything. Kind of wish I had kept one sealed so I wouldn't need to pay $1k or so for one now.

Thanks for the heads up, bought a couple items I plan to crack out for my 1964 Philadelphia gum football raw set:

1964 Merlin Olsen HOF RC PSA 8 NM-MT
1964 Willie Davis HOF RC PSA 8 NM-MT

Down to just the 1964 John Mackey HOF RC to have all of the HOF RC's from that set. For these HOF RC's I'd prefer to buy a nicely centered and graded 7, 7.5 or 8 and not worry about altered, etc. 111/198 overall towards completion.

Still don't understand how they can do this as they're losing money on these offers, and now people wait for them. Great for those of us selling too, but still puzzling.

Any money they're losing is short term. The result of the fiscal stimulus will be inflated prices down the road, whether because of the sale of similar items at the new, higher prices, or, because buyers have more money left in their pocket, they'll be more actively competing with their extra money on items they wouldn't have been able to afford otherwise.

Sellers will also be inclined to list more items, whether similar or not, once they see the inflated results, as well as having more money, themselves, because of goosed sales to restock.

In the long term - more listings, more eyeballs, more money sloshing around, with eBay and the USPS getting their cuts of everything.

Right. I’ve gotten good deals like this before but now they seem to only be scams so I’m just gonna stick with reputable sellers. If they send a empty box it’s my word vs them. Not any fun.

If you assume collectibles maybe. But most of these are used for things where there are hundreds on EBay all selling for the same price like cell phones, PlayStations, etc. I will take advantage of these every time but believe they will be short-loved and cost EBay more than they gain.

And I'm sure with the money you save by taking advantage of these every time gives you a feeling of having had a "positive eBay experience". EBay is going to continue to be your go-to platform to browse and look for items to put on your watch list as you patiently await the next coupon. Maybe you don't buy anything until then, or maybe you do. Maybe you see an item that is a good price, even without the coupon, and hey, since you have an extra 20 percent from your last purchase sitting in your wallet, you go ahead and snag it... or maybe you don't.

In the meantime, sellers are moving product that was just sitting there otherwise, creating a "positive eBay experience" for them. Now they have extra money to spend, either to restock whatever it is they were selling, or maybe they have their eye on items for their own personal use. Maybe they spend their newfound cash on eBay... or maybe they don't.

What eBay is doing with their stimulus is similar to the economic theory behind the Fed lowering interest rates and easing of monetary policy in order to juice the economy. People buy all kinds of stuff when fiscal stimulus is added, whether it's homes, cars, appliances, vacations, etc... and collectibles. And inflation usually follows.

At any rate, I'm sure whatever money it costs them comes out of the advertising budget, anyway. They would just be spending that money somewhere else if they thought it would get better results. I also wouldn't be shocked to find out they get a USPS discount on eBay printed shipping labels during these promotions, as the increased volume of sales is beneficial to both. As long as eBay is increasing the velocity of money, and causing more transactions to occur, both companies will be getting their cuts from fees and increased shipping volume.

I'm sure they have algorithms and data analysts and supercomputers crunching the numbers, and as long as it's getting the desired results, they'll continue to offer these coupons periodically. The end of the coupons, should that occur, won't necessarily mean that their gambit has failed; it could also mean that they've achieved the desired effect and no longer need artificial means to goose sales.

Losing money? Maybe... but I'd guess these promotions are achieving exactly what it is they set out to do - more traffic, more transactions, more listings, more fees.

I hope everyone remembers to do a guest checkout or 10 when these coupons hit. I figure the savings I am getting now helps me recoup some of the outrageous eBay fees I have been paying as a seller since 1997.
