I'm looking for a nice mid grade Morgan Dollar for the price. I'm willing to spend more if the right coin comes along. The trouble is I like the series but don't know much about them and there are literally thousands for sale on eBay which makes it difficult to pick one. I mainly collect dimes, but want to venture into this series as I pick up 1 about every 6 weeks or so.
I was also thinking some well seasoned collectors of this series could post some tips in shopping for a decend Morgan and what to look for. I like toned and non-toned coins.
So far I have these:
1881-S MS64
1883-O MS64
1886 MS65
1887 MS64
1900-O MS64

I can't help but notice that you are missing a CC! I'd be looking in that direction, just to add some spice to the collection. Nice MS-63 or even 64 with a bit of a stretch(?) 1882, '83, or '84 should work?
I would gladly sell you a nice VF 1921 Morgan for $200. [end sarcasm]
Personally, I would get rid of all those widgets you have, add your $200 to it and get an 1881-S in MS67 or maybe a 65-DMPL if you want DMPL. They all look the same except for the date. Why accumulate a bunch of $50 widgets when you can have one really nice coin that is pleasing to look at?

It seems to me that you would find more traction, and likely a better fit for the thread, on the BST board.

I've been a member here for 16yrs and I know that this kinda thread belongs on the BST....BUT I wanted to see if I could get some advice on this series instead of posters telling me that this post belongs elsewhere. It doesn't matter whether I actually buy a damn coin or not, but wanted more of the advice.
@TommyType and @jmlanzaf gave me some and I thank you for it.
Now, not everyone can afford MS67's. Someone has to own the widgets. I'm happy with what I have, so thanks anyway.

An MS67 of a common date would be around $500. If you take your $200 and sell the 5 widgets, you are pretty much there. That was intended - and still is - as helpful advice. I'm a big proponent of type collecting rather than series collecting.
As to the appropriateness of the post, the question about what to buy is appropriate here. The request to "please offer it here" is the only reason it would be more appropriate on BST.

P.S. I should add, that Type Collecting is my second favorite bit of advice. My 1st favorite bit of advice: buy whatever makes you happy.
So, if a thousand low-grade circulated widgets makes you happier than one MS-67 coin, you should buy the widgets.

Don't have anything at that range. I would recommend an MS66 common in PCGS plastic. Check GC on Sunday, you should be able to get in at $200-225.
I like morgans that will hold value. Those can be CCs, PL, DMPLs, higher grade, or highly known doubles/errors/VAMs. Just my two cents.

Good luck...Morgans are a nice U.S. coin... big, heavy silver... My main interest in Morgans was the CC series, though I do have some others. I recommend the CC series since it is not a long one and can be completed with reasonable expenditures. If you are just collecting random coins, then add a CC that you like. Cheers, RickO
MS 66 common dates with clean fields or ms64 Pl or CC for 200.... those are your best options from my point of view

You can get a typical GSA CC for right around $200.

Just picked up an overdate Morgan in DMPL for just over a deuce.
These are dropping. On common dates, don't pay $200 unless they are 64-ish.

I would advise against the crack and cross. Not much to gain even if it makes 5.

Everything you've got currently is common date material. If a coin has great toning then $200 might be warranted but in MS 64 and MS 65 most on your list today are a hundred bucks or less. Maybe a tougher date should be targeted?
Oh, and what ChrisH said above is correct. You're better off selling your MS 64 NGC coin and just buying one in PCGS plastic. Cracking it will cost you as much as the coin's worth.
Your idea of mid grade and my idea of mid grade are quite different
MS64 is not mid grade in my collection. Looking forward to the pictures.
I would try to build a collection that matches with look, color, eye appeal, grade, etc. I have always loved when I am shown a collection that just looks like all the coins belong together. A nice matching set of Morgan's is a beautiful thing.

I will give you a Morgan that will challenge you for $200. Find a 1899 O MS64 PL. These sell for around $200 but they are hard to find. You will not find a single one on eBay now for sale.

Since you don't have a first year 1878 or a Carson City on your list, I might recommend one of those. I'm in "Morgan mode" myself at the moment. Where are you searching? There used to be a master website list on this message board with lots of dealer info and what they specialize in...but I am not finding it so it may have been deleted.
