I'll be more precise. If you zoom in E PLURIBUS UNUM, behind it you will see some letters that SEEM to be old. Is there a chance this planchet had been struck before they struck the coin in 1983? And if so, does it look to be a (whole) old coin? And does this matter any in coin collecting?

There is zero chance this cent was struck on anything but a brand new cent planchet. If you'd like to prove it to yourself, weigh it. It is FAR EASIER to roll out and stamp new planchets than cut down an old coin to the right size. Not to mention 1983 cents are copper plated zinc - no ancient coins used zinc at all.

    Maybe ancient?

  • Oh sorry, in the background above the Monticello, there is writing that seems ancient. Could it be the 1983 was struck over an ancient coin? (Possibly)

@Piggybanker ...That is a cent and the picture is the Lincoln Memorial, not Monticello. And the E Pluribus Unum is Latin...'From many, One'...signifying the United States. Cheers, RickO

Now you are starting to strain credulity. Those letters in that "ancient" writing are exactly the same letters we use today, there is nothing "ancient" about them. The only reason you would even suggest "ancient" as opposed to "foreign" is if you knew it was Latin.

This is where people start assuming you are simply trolling...even if June is Be Nice to Newbies Month.

Piggy sorry you did not find the right one but keep looking. Right now I have over 25 pounds of pennies to look over I am going to wait until I retire before I start looking. Mind I ask you age? I will give you mine I have about 10 more years before I can start collection Social Security. That is if I live the next 10 years. I notice many of my friend are dropping DEAD many Co workers. But Piggy I just was curious and if you feel you don't want to share that I am good with that. But really keep looking I just won a new coin today its a 1796 from England. Why you ask would I do that? It was PRETTY and I liked it. You collect what you like and come back and share it here. Lots of good people here. I unfortunately am not a real good guy on a normal day. Right now I took some pain pills to take the edge off my Diabetes so I am feeling good. Piggy I hope you never get old cause it suck's! Have a great Sunday Piggy! Good chattin with you.

I'm not that far behind you. I'm 53 and love this age. The perfect age for settling and not having the need to go do this and that constantly.
I guess you could say, slowing down. I love this hobby /career.
I say career because, " Coin collecting is a lot of work!" But I have time and there is nothing more rewarding than finding that pretty penny. I have retired from being a muralist. That was my passion but my body tells me I had to find another. So I collect old bottles and have over about 200 pre 1900's. Plus some...
I can almost feel the history just touching old items. It's just neat. Well thank you for the interest. I am sure your 1796 win is a beauty and will you share by posting it?
    Thanks Gluggo...

For sure, send to PCGS asap and pay the extra fees needed.

Thanks Bob..do you really believe that it would be worth my while to send it? I do believe it is but wanted to make sure. The picture quality isn't the same as seeing it with the naked eye. There is much more to the coin than what the picture shows. I will take more and see if I can show it as I'm seeing it. Thanks again

So first you show a partial photo and ask if its double, then show the whole coin and ask if there is ancient writing behind the Latin writing caused by being pressed from an ancient coin. YES send it to PCGS and stop with the "oh if you seen it in hand BS cuz the pics wont show it". and since its be nice to newbies month, have a good one! :)

With all due respect, how in the world could this happen? It is a preposterous idea for so many reasons. Logic needs to be part of the equation.

Every second you spend pondering this coin is a waste of your time.

    Just my opinion....

No don't send it. It's not a DDR you will spend a lot of $$$ to find out it's not.

There are some DDR we call them Big DDR but some of the Small one's are not worth sending in even if it is a DDR may only be worth $2.00 but the Big DDR is worth $200 and that one you are showing is not one so don't do it. But that is just me dumb Type2 trying to help you out.
