1943 d wheat penny bronze

Here is what appears to be an authentic 1943 wheat penny bronze minted in Denver. Any thoughts on why it may be a fake?

    For starters--besides the fact that 99.9999999% of these are fake--the bubbles seen on the surfaces on both sides and the lamination at the reverse rim all suggest to me that this is a cast counterfeit.

    Nonetheless, test it with a magnet to rule out a copper-plated coin.

    I will have to take a look at the known authentic copper piece(s) struck at Denver to see if there are any pick-up-points from the original dies. I would take it to a coin show if there is one in your area, if not, try a local dealer and see what they say. Stranger things have happened and be sure to keep us informed!

    As far as I can tell...NO GOOD...look at IN GOD WE TRUST (yours has short legs on the W and R for starters) in comparison to the PCGS CoinFacts link above, and the loop of the R in LIBERTY.

    @Spiffy....Welcome aboard......That looks like a cast counterfeit... The 'debris' at the top of the reverse indicates this... and the W on the obverse is also defective. You can certainly send it in for authentication, however, I believe you will be disappointed. Let us know how it goes... Cheers, RickO

    Everything looks 'off' on that coin, especially the rims, color and the grainy/bubbly surfaces. I think the whole coin is bad.

    Yikes! Well, consider yourself schooled by the above posts. Faker, just can't get those relatively poor casting marks and typical (for casting) fuzzy details.....Now if D. Carr had struck it....

    Cast fake most likely. If struck, made from poorly made dies. That mess on the reverse is proof. The letters on the obverse are worrisome, as is the mushy portrait on a high grade "coin".

    BTW, on a coin such as this the burden of proof is on the owner to prove it is real. To a trained and untrained eye it does not "appear to be authentic".

    But it is a great souvenir in any case.

    Yes, I have been inspecting the coin very closely since I've started reading your comments. Terrific responses too! I am helping a friend get a better idea whether this coin is real. He obtained it about 15 years ago which helps to gauge better when it might have been cast. The graininess is what stands out to me the most. After that I'd say what looks like weld spatter. So, if it is cast then might that cast have come from a mold of a steel 1943 d?

    @Spiffy yes, it's easiest to cast from a steel 1943-D. That way you would get the correct style and position of the mintmark D but the surfaces are still the telltale.
