Post script to Moffatt & Company letter, April 14, 1851, regarding the status of the U.S. Assay Office in San Francisco.

“P.S. Lest it might be inferred, that with the private coin token of, that of Moffat & Co. is included, we deem it proper to say, that we discontinued its issue, before commencing operations under the Gov’t Contract – that it still has, as it has ever had, the confidence of the public, and continues to circulate at par, quite as freely as coin of the U.S.”

While coins - representing U.S. currency - were utilized then, it is no longer tolerated today - and indeed will result in the full wrath and fury of the Treasury. However, gold nuggets still enjoy a major market as bullion and, in some cases, jewelry. Gold coins of other nations also are freely traded, though not honored as currency. As someone has said in the past..."Gold is money." and "Gold has never been worth nothing."....Cheers, RickO

Well, if the businesses weren't run by the people, THE people wouldn't exist for the benefit of the office of those elected to represent them.
