"Letters sent and received by the Secretary of the Treasury relating to Branch Mints."
The following two U.S. Mint letter volumes have been digitized and uploaded to NNP. Access is free.

RG104 entry-216, Volume 07
August 14, 1845 - December 18, 1848

RG104 entry-216, Volume 08
January 8 1849 - June 30, 1852

Documents are in rough chronological order but are not separated by Branch Mint facility or subject. Blank sheets and routine briefs/endorsements have been omitted. Annotations and addenda sheets have been digitized as they appear in the originals.

Some documents might duplicate those in RG104 Entry 1 but no specific identification has been attempted.

All volumes in E-216 were evidently assembled at a much later date from Mint correspondence files. The criteria for selection/preservation are unknown.

Here is a sample page concerning the first gold dollars produced and related problems of adjusting the planchets.

Thanks Roger.... These old letters are very interesting. The penmanship is incredible...from a time where is was a mandatory skill. Cheers, RickO

I'm still trying to imagine having to manually weigh and adjust those tiny gold dollar planchets..... I wonder if this was part of the impetus for Franklin Peale hiring female adjusters?
